10 X 20 Kitchen Design Ideas – As someone who has never had a large kitchen in any of the homes I’ve lived in, I really love and appreciate the smart ideas that come out of designing small spaces (especially kitchens). I personally had to make a small one with this type of room, so if you have a small kitchen that you want to improve, I was in your shoes. I’m in your shoes right now! Every day I look at my sweet kitchen and ask her, “How can I make you better?! Talk to me!” So I hope I recommend some great ideas today that you can use whether you are a homeowner or a designer. Maybe I’ll get some interesting ideas too 🙂

10 X 20 Kitchen Design Ideas
Okay, okay, I know you just saw this kitchen last week, but since it was the inspiration for this post, I thought it should be first. I think the most common startup strategy to steal is a no time strategy. Although it was filmed and planned for Emma’s new book, this kitchen was actually designed seven years ago. Could you tell?? I don’t either. Classic materials (white oak and white marble), a neutral but attractive color palette, clean lines and simple appliances are all the ingredients to create a kitchen that will look amazing for years to come.

One thing Ryan mentioned in the post is how the island and kitchen counter are made from the same marble. Not only is it easy and beautiful, but it helps the corner area look more cohesive. Your eyes can rest too. That’s a big deal because they went with an open shelf. As you will soon see, I am a HUGE fan of open shelving when it makes sense. In particular, I think that really small kitchens are the best place for them. how come? Well, if you live alone or with one other person, you probably don’t need tons of dishes, glassware, etc. It makes storage waaaay easier and everything looks organized. It also opens up the top half of your kitchen, making it look bigger and lighter. And finally, it’s an easy way to make your kitchen look good and give it your own style. You can easily add color with plates or glasses, arrange some beautiful vases and plates, the sky is the limit. The playground is fun 🙂
Oh, and of course I have to talk about the transformer powers of this island. As mentioned above, it can be an island, but it can also be a table. And if necessary, it can be moved to the middle of the studio and become a dining table for four (maybe even six :))

31 Best Kitchen Island Ideas For Your Home
And here is my old oasis. While I miss the lack of appliance storage (look at the cabinet opposite the oven – not within easy reach) and the UGLY floor, I miss everything else so much. This kitchen was a true DIY labor of love that probably made my dad decide to disown me because of my “direct and detailed” requests.

So what exactly did I do with my really small kitchen?? Fun fact: this wasn’t the smallest kitchen I’ve ever lived in – Hey, San Francisco! Ok here is the list:
If you’re wondering if I removed the cabinet door from the top, I didn’t. They were already there. Although I think they used to have doors once. I enjoyed making them and displaying all the things I wanted to look at and use. Having a door would have been a missed design opportunity in my opinion. Sooo, if you have enough storage enclosed, consider removing some (or all) of the upper cabinet doors and painting them all the same color to give them a more intentional look (unless they’re all already the same color). I’m really thinking about it in my new kitchen.
Before And After: Kitchen Island Design Ideas
So on the left is my other love – my old game. Look, I could have made a nice bistro table and two dining chairs and called it a day. But a) I tend to make things too difficult for me, but mostly b) I really wanted to use as much square footage as possible – something everyone should try to do if they can when designing a small space. Everyone. Inch. to read. Also, I can say from experience that it made the place feel much bigger. I had a bistro set up there for a while and it really felt small.
All the wooden parts are made from the stairs! This meant that the front of each piece was already rounded. Then I was lucky that my father had a friend who had big tools that could easily go around corners and sides. But if you want to make a bench or a party between two walls, you don’t have to worry about it! Then my sister and I made blue velvet backs (no sewing machine needed) and brass cut Restoration Hardware curtain rods from my dad’s girlfriend’s find. I go into everything in the first guide, but I wanted to show you that even if you rent, there are still many things you can do. Don’t let the phrase “Rental Only” stop you from creating the home you truly want.
My only regret in the kitchen (besides not doing something about the floor) is that I didn’t get the awesome roman shade for the window. Is there always room for improvement?? 🙂

Welcome to Velinda’s kitchen in the basement. He lives in an apartment, or as he puts it, “a 400 square foot little hobbit house with my 980 square foot bungalow above it,” which he rents out. There are a lot of ideas out there, so buckle up. First, let’s talk about equipment. The smallest oven you see is 5 in one oven! According to him, “bakes, grills, grills, cooks and microwaves … and fits in a 24” cabinet. I’m sorry to announce that I think it’s no longer available, but you get the idea when it comes to furniture and small spaces, see what you can mix and match.
What he did was smart and easy was to take a standard size sink and turn it on its side. I’ll let him tell you why:
“I didn’t want an ordinary mini sink. I wanted something that would fit in a crock pot or dutch oven but also maximize counter space. So I turned the standard sink on its side…meaning the sink is shallow. Wrong, I know, but this used every inch the narrow 20” wide (but 24” deep!!) base cabinet allowed. PLUS added storage space below by putting the trash (which was one of my must-haves) on one side instead of in the middle, freeing up half of the cabinet!
Smart isn’t it!!!! Also, notice how he chose a wall-mounted faucet so it wouldn’t need counter space when he folded it all over the place. It’s all on purpose… because it is.

Velinda also said that she chose these shiny Zellige tiles to help reflect the ambient light. It’s a great way to make a space bigger. It’s like a mirror, but without looking at it! Actually, think twice about using matte tiles in a small kitchen for this reason.
Did you see those soft shelves too?? Since he made a great design statement with the tiled walls and hood, choosing these thin metal shelves was a good choice to maximize the space while not compromising on the necessary storage space. Plus they look great!
Velinda’s last little kitchen (but read her entire article) is the metal she used as a kitchen utensil rack. One towel rail is near the hood for heavy pots and the other on the side of the cabinet is a hanging rod. It was the perfect size, had lots of hooks and helped free up some drawer space. It’s especially important when the kitchen is fun 🙂
