My client is a young manager who lives with her husband and two small children in a small two-room apartment. She wanted to update her living room, kitchen, dining room and shared bathroom, which is why they used my Remodel design package.

In the living room, the brown striped wallpaper they used for the feature wall was already looking pretty dated.
My client’s husband also initially thought open shelving would be enough. But after living in their condo for a few years, they quickly discovered that open shelving required regular maintenance; otherwise you’ll just look embarrassed.
They also had a brown sofa bed that my client wanted to replace. She was looking for a sofa that would suit the whole family, but still look sophisticated and timeless enough to withstand changing interior design trends.
The living room also originally had a small table for children to play or study, but they found that they often pushed the table to have more space for socializing.

Poor waterproofing by the investor has led to damage to the walls in the living room, which are simply covered with wall-to-wall curtains (purchased at retail). Although the developer fixed the problem of water leakage in the walls, I mentioned to the client that they need to check that the interior of the walls is not full of mold. This would certainly be a health problem for them.
Also note that the installer of their A/C unit didn’t even bother to hide the ducts in the walls. They reasoned that they could not do this because the walls of the apartment were made of thick concrete.
The kitchen cabinets in the apartment definitely looked like they were stuck in the 2000s. My client also wanted to free up a lot of counter space and needed special cabinets to house her appliances.
The floor tiles also hadn’t been replaced in a while. It didn’t help that her grout lines made the floor look dirty, no matter how many times it was cleaned and mopped.

My client wanted to replace the refrigerator with a larger two-door unit. However, she felt that the corner was too deep and they couldn’t organize their pantry items on the top shelf.
They created this food bank in the interest of “saving space”. But the size didn’t fit the area. It also often became cluttered with kitchen utensils and appliances – not a very good look for a dining table.
My client knew she needed extra space for cooking prep, and this served that purpose. However, she kind of wanted a separate dining room so she wouldn’t have to clutter up this counter with kitchen utensils. But she wasn’t sure if the kitchen counter and dining table would fit in that space.
When you enter their apartment, the first thing that catches your eye is this neat, but mostly underutilized corner:

A small console held groceries, toys, shoe boxes – not really a happy mix of things you’d normally find in a small apartment.
This entryway wall was also a bit uninspired, despite their beautiful wedding and family photos displayed on the wall. Again, the open shelf console simply added to the cluttered look.
My clients were actually a very stylish couple, but the interior of their apartment didn’t really reflect their style and personality. Not just their guest bathroom.
The bathroom lacked cupboards and storage space, so everything was out in the open. The tiles – like in the kitchen – were the basic finishes of the apartment and completely uninspired.

Before I continue showing you the “after” shots, here’s a quick look at the mood board and palette I created for my clients.
Considering my clients’ lifestyle preferences and even their sense of style and fashion, I wanted to give them apartment interiors that look more sophisticated. But since they had two young children, I didn’t want to make it too sophisticated that they would have to worry about breaking things.
I knew I wanted their apartment to still look “loved and lived in” enough that it didn’t feel like they were living in a glass house. It definitely needed a few urban elements to balance out the homey look.
My client also specified a white brick wall, and while we had reviewed wallpaper options beforehand to keep the budget low, she ultimately decided to go with the real thing – even if it meant a longer renovation time.

The colors I chose were cold-neutral. The interior of their previous apartments was warm and brown, and this time I wanted to deviate from all that warmth.
I incorporated warm tones through wood finishes and black and copper metallic accents. In terms of accent colors, my client ended up using only teal (Boysen’s Space Encounters).
Talk about an entry that instantly tells a story! Instead of bringing back the black and white photos that filled this wall, I told my clients to choose color family photos to add a little more interest. I also felt this showed more of their family life and personality—with lots of fun and color!
My client bought the frames herself and her husband installed them. Let’s just say it’s a home project that probably won’t happen again anytime soon haha.

We kept the floor plan because we didn’t move the electrical and TV sockets. But we removed the striped brown wallpaper and installed whitewashed brick from EZ Rocks. The brick wall added just the right amount of texture and visual interest to the space, without overwhelming the wall, as dark wallpaper would.
I added more light fixtures because the previous single light did not provide enough light in the unit at night. My client chose not to install a ceiling to cover the wires, but we worked around that by smoothing the dirty finish and ceiling putty and covering the wires with PVC. It’s not ideal, but in the interest of budget or if your building management doesn’t allow ceiling work, this is a sufficient alternative.
I had my favorite curtain maker replace the old curtains with pleated curtain rods. This made it easier for my clients to open and close the curtains as the day progressed, as the light in the afternoon can be blinding.
To fix the damaged wall and the exposed air conditioner, I had my contractor make a new wall to cover it. We only sacrificed a few centimeters of space for this, but it was worth it.
Earth Interior Design
The media cabinet was customized by Raw.Tura, while the rug is a (super affordable!) Ikea find from Source Furniture.
The wall cabinets were manufactured by my trusted general contractor—it’s a simple design with push-open doors. I still went for a few open shelves, because I knew my client had decor and personal items that could be used to decorate. But giving them a shelf that could be closed allowed them not to think too much about window displays and decoration.
They had a collection of pillowcases in black, white and gray. Despite the diverse models, they all work well together due to their cohesive palette.
My client’s brother-in-law is an art curator (check out his online art gallery) and he referred her to artist Jay Ragma, who created two modernist pieces of art on the sofa.

I took a banquette with storage underneath, to save much needed space. It also allowed them to choose an extendable dining table from Furniture Republic, so they can accommodate more dishes when they have guests over. The chairs are from West Elm, while the colorful artwork is by Monnar Baldemor.
I also had a ceiling shelf made for the bar to display drinks and glassware. My clients wanted to entertain because they love to cook, so this was a great choice for them.
I wish they had glass shelves so the light from the ceiling would shine through to the bench, but my clients chose a plywood base instead.
Note my flooring choices: I chose luxury vinyl tile (LVT) for the living room and dining room. I am very interested in LVT at the moment because they are so easy to install, so easy to replace if they fail. But they can’t be easily damaged because they’re made of a strong synthetic material—unlike the vinyl tiles of the past. They are also waterproof, fire resistant, suitable for light and heavy foot traffic (I have also specified them for many commercial projects).
