Unless they work regularly. I have three days to prepare everything. This is in the middle of a crazy work week and it’s even crazier because I have another Diwali collaboration and I’m leaving the city on the fourth day. Every hour is already planned and Diwali decorations in our home are nowhere on the agenda.

I usually understand that there are not enough hours in the day to complete all the work that needs to be done in them. If I start thinking about how and when I’m going to do something, sometimes it becomes overwhelming.

So I made a simple rule for myself. don’t think If an interesting opportunity comes to you, say ‘yes’ first. Once you commit, you will automatically start working and everything will happen.
So they got engaged three days ago and I didn’t know what I was going to do. I know I don’t have time to shop, so the first project is to use everything I have at home. Mom came to the rescue here. I called him and asked him to send me a worthy Diwali decoration. This includes candles, diapers, dupatta, scarves, necklaces and all her brass accessories.
Then I started browsing the internet. I scoured Pinterest and my personal blog for Diwali decorating ideas. It’s something I always do when I’m looking for ideas from scratch. Inundating myself with beautiful photos gives me a mental picture of where I’m traveling.
The first place I wanted to decorate was our guest house. Having access to the festival means you’re waiting and wondering about everything else in the Store.

Now the point is that I took time to decorate for Diwali a month ago. I find it a huge waste of time to do it again before packing. So the second project is that from now on all my decorations should continue until Diwali so that I don’t have to redecorate.
This means fresh flowers come out. I used a fake chain I had and hung it on the back of the Buddha. Another advantage of using artificial flowers is that I can start preparing a day in advance. I don’t have to wait for fresh flowers in the morning to take a picture of myself.
Then, the second entrance… we go out to our living room. I decided to use dupattas to make a clean cloth.
A local carpenter helped fix five hooks at the top of the door. I then fold each dupatta in half lengthwise and place safety pins on the 2 ends and in the center of the dupatta. I hung the safety pin from the hook and it gave me a nice sausage on the fabric.

Then, sparkle along the edges of the fabric. There was no way I had to do it again, and the fake flower came to the rescue again. I attached these sparklers to the durian tree with a needle and thread and sewed them three or four times around the stem. I space it every 5-6 flowers.
Then I had to attach the two doors on either side of the door at different heights to fit one on top of the other. After experimenting with various types of hooks with double sided tape that kept falling off, I finally got my hands on these still sturdy and unobtrusive Command hooks. An embroidery thread runs around the fabric I want to hang. I tied this loose enough so that I could attach the wire itself to the wall hook.
Then the dining room. This is on the side of our living room so it will enjoy our entire living space.
I saw a beautiful flower candle in our Diwali Decor Ideas post, which made me think that a marigold candle would be perfect on our dining room table. This is easy enough to do.

The logic behind the chandelier is the same as the rest of the decor. I used fake flowers and leaves to keep them festive. I started with the green one, wrapping it around an earring.
The hooks are a bit heavy on the greens and it has become just as difficult to control. So I hung it on the raft using black embroidery thread. The lights from the raft above came into the path of the chopper. I took these things out to touch the raft so I had room to hang the lights underneath.
Then came these gold fillings that periodically rotated in a circle to add some light to the Lampshades.
I finally added a fairy wire to the chandelier and now the light comes on when I turn off the light above it.

Red and gold tablecloths and a large bouquet of fresh flowers complete the festive look. A bronze urn for flowers along with a large brass lamp says “Diwali” all the way.
Finally, inspired by a photo from our post on marigold decorating ideas, I tied a bouquet of fresh jasmine flowers behind the dining room chair. Our specialty food is completely ready for Diwali.
This left the living room. We also have to give it a festive look. A beautiful and bright phulkari from mom’s collection is perfect to brighten up the cream sofa.
An abundance of brass, candles, daisies and fresh flowers filled the room, also looking timeless.

Then it’s up to Danesh to work his magic. We thought it would only take a few hours, but it took as long as possible to shoot home to put everything on Made for me. Every time he clicks on a ‘scene’, I quietly hand him my phone to take some pictures, which he eagerly asks for. So the picture you see today is of him.
I don’t know how many more hours he spent filtering and editing all the photos he took, but this is the final result.
I don’t know what it looks like, but it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. There’s something wonderful about being able to see your work in print, and I really can’t explain the joy and pride I feel every time I hold this copy in my hand. Probably because it was the first time. Maybe I won’t be so excited later…and maybe I will!
I was in a rush to finish my Diwali decoration every year and get the blog photos in time to decorate this year…no photos shared until the article was published. It’s really worth the effort and definitely worth the wait.
