First use the water brush. Squeeze it slightly to release some water. Then paint with water to create a circular shape.

Then take one of the water-based markers and dab it on the parts where you painted with water. We will thus create the watercolor effect with the markers and the water brush.

If you see that the color is not vivid enough, take the pencil and color it again.

Use a paper towel or cloth to clean the water brush so it doesn’t get into the next watercolor background.

To speed up the drying process is to take a cloth and dab it to eliminate excess water.

Repeat the above steps with the markers you want for the watercolor background. I’m making three different colors because in the next step I’m going to doodle balloons on them.

Draw rectangles with a black marker and color inside them. Here’s where our birthday card will be.

Make sure the rectangles are large enough to fit the letters. And if you want to add a longer message, you can also draw multiple rectangles.

When the watercolor background was completely dry, I used the Mono-line 03 Pigeon Letters pencil to draw the balloons.

Use your best fonts and write Happy Birthday inside the black rectangles we drew earlier. I decided to write Happy Birthday in block letters with a Craftsmart extra fine oil marker, but you can use any white gel pen or marker that sticks out of the back rectangles.

If you like this style of block letters. And if you want to practice, I’ve created a print worksheet for you. Fill out the form at the end of this blog post to receive it for FREE!

You can leave the card as is or add some embellishments to make it stand out! I decided to scribble stars and dots around the paper.

I love how easy this machine is to make and how beautiful it is. What do you think?

By signing up, you will receive my newsletter with updates on my new files, workbooks, lessons, and free blog posts. I was invited to a kids birthday party (if you’re a parent, you know that birthday parties are an inevitable part of parenting, haha). I had enough brain space to organize presents and even wrap them (feeling a little proud of myself). But then… I realized I didn’t have the card!

I decided to go with a fun (read = easy to draw) colorful candy theme that any child would enjoy.

Here’s how we completed this challenge. Every morning I held a live stream in our Facebook group to share ideas and draw suggestions. And so I’ve uploaded the live stream recordings here on the blog, so you can always find them. 🙂

I started by drawing 4 different designs for the DIY cards. I initially fell in love with the candle design (see below), but then decided to go with the cupcake design based on your feedback. I actually think the cupcake is the cutest and will make the card recipient the happiest. Thank you so much for your contribution! That’s why it’s better to create together. 🙂

My creative process always begins with research. So here are some ideas to get you started with DIY cards.

One idea is to have a beautiful and unique background (because EVERY watercolor is unique) with letters on it. Super easy and quick!

Or you can use the plastic bag trick to create a quick, easy, foolproof watercolor background. The lady in this video uses markers to add colors, but you can simply put a few drops of watercolor on the plastic bag to get the same effect:

Another idea is to drop a few splashes of color and then add some scribbled designs on top. I love scribbled flowers and love the look of this effect. So easy!

Here are some ideas to get you started. And in our challenge we will practice more on a kawaii roof.
