Fireplace Ideas With Tv Above – Happy Friday, friends—it’s time to discuss design! Many of you have asked for a longer discussion on this topic and I thought this was a great idea… mounting a TV above the fireplace. Should it be done? Is this a design flaw? Is it more active? What do you do when that’s your only choice? What is the best case scenario? I’m spoiling everything in this post! Click to read all about it…
I don’t mind putting the TV above the fireplace, but it totally depends on the height of the fireplace, other alternatives in the room, and the size of the TV.
Fireplace Ideas With Tv Above
I know that really cut it short and didn’t give you a clear answer, so let’s break it down. Why is a TV above the fireplace a bad option to start with? A lot of people worry about straining your neck to see it…it’s not a great viewing height. An exception is if you have a modern fireplace or a very low fireplace (scale, especially height, definitely comes into play). Another concern is that the TV will clash with other focal points in the room – the fireplace itself, the window, built-ins, etc. competes. Many people hate the idea of looking at an ugly TV set in a beautiful architectural element in the living room.

Do you have something to remember? We live in an age where technology and television are a part of every home. They are only integrated into life at this time. They bring us fun, joy and something to bond with our families. They may be a bigger part of life than you expect. Adding them to your home in a designer way can help make them feel less conspicuous or an afterthought.
So what is the ideal scenario? To be honest, there probably isn’t a TV above the fireplace…not so popular. Or at least a hidden TV above the fireplace.
In our current house, we decided to have a special room for watching TV. This takes place in the basement or media room.
That’s what we call it. I understand that one of the luxuries and perks of living in a big house is a special place to watch our favorite shows. Our official living room

In our previous houses, space was scarce and such a “media room” could never have been accommodated. Now what to do with the TV? I think you have a few different options:
Do you know what I did in my first house? Number two. Guess what I did in my second home? Number three. All this needs to be said –
For example, the living room. The TV could only be on one wall and it was above the fireplace. Why? We had a large picture window on the left side of the room, an entry wall that opened into the kitchen adjacent to the window wall, and given the size of the space – the couch only fit in one direction. This means that the TV should be on the wall of the fireplace. We decided to redo the fireplace and add built-ins. Why did I choose to mount the TV above the fireplace instead of to the left or right in one of the built-in cabinets? To be honest, I would have been concerned about its compatibility, and our TV was too big to fit.
I weighed the pros and cons and tried to optimize a less-than-ideal situation. I wanted the TV to feel balanced in the room above the fireplace, but that meant it would be mounted higher than the proper viewing height. So, I tried to solve the problem when buying a sofa. Back height is what you want to look for in this case. The problem with placing the TV above the fireplace is that it usually causes stress on your neck to look up. I chose a sofa with a back that snuggles into you and rests your neck comfortably on the pillows.
Tv Above Fireplace? I Don’t Want To, But My Partner Does
. It’s not comfortable or great to watch TV while straining your neck. That’s when I cuddled up to my big TV above the fireplace. I didn’t even try to hide it. I was lucky enough to have a husband with a big TV and we could watch movies on our comfortable couch without neck pain. It was a decent setup!
If I could repeat the same scenario in my old living room, the only thing I would do differently is upgrade the TV. Yes, you knew I was talking about the Samsung Frame. It is smooth and
Speaking of Frame TV, it’s definitely on our wish list this year! I’ll take any chance I can to make TV look like art… seems like a no-brainer. If you don’t have the budget for it, don’t panic! There are other ways to “disguise” your TV…hide it behind a panel, put up artwork, put a gallery wall around it, etc. Get creative to mix it up and make it feel like badass technology.
The last option is to accept cohabitation. My type A personality and OCD couldn’t get away with it, but many people do and it works! Place the TV at an appropriate viewing height to the left or right of the fireplace and try to balance it with other objects or architectural features.

. Personally, I prefer the symmetry of the bottom image to the top…simply because it feels more intentional and defined. Try using a built-in on one side of the fireplace and a bench on the other, or something completely different.
Bottom line…do what works best for you and your space! Each scene is unique and should be treated as such. Consider how your family will watch TV, other factors in the room, and most importantly, scale. I hope this post has been helpful in sharing all aspects of the great TV over the fireplace discussion. Since fireplaces are a beautiful focal point in many rooms, it’s a shame to ruin the look with this big old black box. Also, it’s usually not the best of viewing angles. But there are some rooms where the only logical place to put the TV is above the fireplace. This made me look for other places where the TV is mounted above the fireplace in a way that does not detract from the beauty of the room. To my surprise, I found so many great ideas and I’m excited to share these inspiring places with you!
Let’s start with this beautiful fireplace from Sarah’s Life of Virginia Street – adding plank and sheet molding above the mantel to create the perfect spot for a high-end, built-in-looking TV:

Another option is to go big and add bookcases that not only form around the fireplace, but also on each side – love this look:

Being a lover of harmony, I also love the look of this double-burner TV above the fireplace (from the movie At Home):
What do all these pictures have in common? The TV is surrounded by decorative molding that runs from the top of the mantel to the ceiling, the same color as the molding around the fireplace – it’s like a formula for beauty!

What if you have a two-story fireplace? Kelly Nunn’s two-story stone fireplace is a great example of simplicity—she mounted the TV above the fireplace next to the mantel so it looks like it’s leaning against it:
Of course, there is always the option of creatively hiding the TV. One of my favorite solutions for hiding a TV above a fireplace is to mount it behind sliding or hinged doors. Alicia and Nick created a classic Craftsman-style fireplace with bi-fold doors to reveal a hidden TV – you wouldn’t think they had a TV above the fireplace, would you? Very nicely done!
They even share free building plans if you want to recreate it in your own home. Check out more of this great DIY over at Nick + Alicia.
