A few months ago I shared tips for improving the basic kitchen without renovating, and today I have another easy way to help you love your kitchen. I decided to decorate the upper part of our kitchen, and I think you will be surprised at the difference it makes!

The picture before I show the cabinets shows our spring kitchen decor. I really like this look, but I wanted it to be warmer and more welcoming, with a little cottage charm.

How To Decorate Above Your Kitchen Cabinets

Before you start decorating your cabinet tops, gather decorative pieces from around your home to use on your kitchen cabinets. Here are some ideas that work for many different styles.

I decided to go for a traditional look with a cozy cottage vibe. But if you have a farmhouse kitchen, here are some more ideas for farmhouse decor on your kitchen cabinets.

Brand new! Here are some mood boards showing ideas on how to decorate above kitchen cabinets for different design styles. We cover vintage, beach, farmhouse, minimal and traditional modern. Then, keep scrolling down for decor finds and more decorating tips based on your cabinet layout.

First, here’s an idea if you want to create a vintage look in your kitchen. You can find vintage picture frames at thrift stores, and place them on your kitchen cabinets. Change the shapes and heights for a more collected look, or keep them equal for something simple.

Tip: If you find some beautiful frames but don’t like the paint, you can use a rub ‘n buff to restore the metal tone. Personally, I love the look of antique brass frames!

Third, here’s more beautiful than cabinet decor for a farmhouse kitchen. Layer wooden cutting boards or breadboards on top of the cabinet to add warmth and interest to the space. Again, you can use identical boards spaced evenly for a simple design.

This is an additional idea to decorate the upper part of the cabinets in a small or boho kitchen. Use two very large baskets that are evenly spaced. You can even use the baskets to store seasonal decorations in plastic bags.

How To Decorate Above Kitchen Cabinets 2024

Finally, here’s a traditional design for kitchen cabinets above, similar to what I did! Use small groupings such as vases, planters or baskets mixed with fake plants. Keep it low for a modern look or go high for a cottage look.

In this article we will examine the types of decoration used on the cabinet. You probably have many of these items! But if you’re starting from scratch, here are some of my favorites for decorating more than just kitchen cabinets. You can find many of these items at thrift stores or thrift stores to get this look on a budget.

I like to group vases or planters with similar color palettes. For example, I arranged a collection of gray and white vases above our microwave for a communal look.

Plants and faux flowers add a pop of color to the top of the cabinet. Or, try dried flowers for neutral colors.

Wooden bowls and wicker baskets are a great idea to add texture to cabinet ceilings. Natural materials also warm up the completely white kitchen.

I don’t keep my favorite cookbooks on the top of the cabinet because they want to be accessible! But they are useful for storing short decorative items or filling a small space.

Now, there are some more unique ideas on how to decorate above the kitchen cabinets. Most importantly, you’ll want to group decorative items together based on cabinet placement.

Since we have step-by-step kitchen appliances, it was easy to decide where to put the decorative groups. The level height of the cabinets divides the space above into upper and lower.

When it comes to decorating upper cabinets, balance is key! Try to reflect colors, textures and shapes so that the design has a cohesive feel.

If you need some encouragement, remember that decorating a new space takes a lot of effort. When we decorated the upper part of our kitchen, I made a design and lived with it for a few days and decided to make some changes. I am very happy with the final look!

On the other hand, I don’t use the perfect design for single-height cabinets from my kitchen.
