Designs For Paper Mache – Paper mache is a fun craft that I love to do.  I am very happy that my daughter has been looking forward to this craft for some time.  These modern paper mache bowls were a great family adventure.  I just had to mention that we were ready to launch the craft and the balloons were filled in seconds.

This is my mommy and me DIY and I’m so excited to share it because it was so much fun.  My daughter and I had a blast painting these fun modern paper mache bowls.

First, tear the newspaper into strips and prepare them for use.  Then fill the balloons in three different sizes and use mod podge to apply newspaper to the balloons.  Leave to dry overnight.  Be sure to use at least 3-4 layers of newspaper tape to ensure the bowls hold some weight and are fairly strong.

After the outer paint is completely dry, paint the inside of the bowls and let them dry completely.

In the next steps, we will let our creativity flow fully.  We chose scrapbook paper that had flowers and circles with fun glitter.

Cut the scrapbook paper into different shapes and plan how you want the scrapbook paper pieces to be placed on top of the bowls.

Apply the scrapbook paper design to the inside of the bowls and cover the entire surface of the bowls with mod podge to create a surface seal.

We also decided to do a final coat of mod podge on the outside of the bowls to create a seal as well since they will be used in my daughter’s playroom.  This extra layer of mod podge allows you to continue reinforcing the bowls.

I think they turned out really well and I’m sure they will help a lot with the organization in my daughter’s playroom.

My daughter had so much fun working on this project and I was so proud of how she handled the wait until she finally got her bowls to decorate and use in her playroom.

DIY modern paper vases!

The story of how I came to this realization: My husband and I spent a week working and studying from my in-laws’ home. My daughter in law is still in elementary school so we have been with her while she is now doing school online. I was looking for something to do so she could take a break from staring at her laptop. I invented papier mache!

Paper mache is simple enough for kids to make and complex enough for adults to take it to another level – the result is truly beautiful for both. It’s also very satisfying to see scraps of recycled newspaper, flour and water shaped into these modern organic vases, perfect for storing dried flowers, paper palm leaves or raffia palm leaves, your keys, jewelery and more. I am addicted and always thinking of new ways to use papier mache!

This craft is also perfect for self-isolation since you probably have all the ingredients at home. No need to run to the party store, there are tons of paper mache crafts you can do without balloons, the sky’s the limit!

*Update September 2020: Since making these vases, I’ve also been playing with papier mache clay! In this blog post, I share the paper mache recipe along with how to make the modern round vase above.

A random fact I found while googling how to make papermache for beginners is that papermache is believed to have been discovered and developed in China around 200 BC!

Start by cutting strips of newspaper about 1/2 inch long by 5 inches. Mix the papier mache glue recipe by adding water to 1/2 cup flour until it is the consistency of white glue. You can make more glue if needed. The glue can also be stored in a sealed container for several days, just mix it before using it again. Read Gilded Stork’s guide to papier mache glue here.

Cover the bowl with plastic wrap, which will allow for easy removal of the dried paper pulp. Dip the paper into the glue and run your finger over it to remove excess glue. Place the paper on the bowl. Continue until the bowl is completely covered.

Allow to dry completely. I found that it took about three to four hours for one layer of paper mache to dry completely. I did three layers of each texture before removing them from the bowl or popping the balloons.

To make a shorter vase out of paper, I shape two bowl structures. I turned one of the finished bowl shapes upside down and cut an opening for the neck of the vase in the narrowest part. I glued the widest parts using a glue gun. I also glued on a cardboard cutout to elongate the neck and give it a little lip (yes, I googled vase anatomy to make sure I was using the right names!).

To make a taller vase, I made a small balloon for the lower part of the body. For the upper body, I hot glued the two bowl structures together at their widest point and cut out a hole on either side. If I were to do it again, I would just use balloons. I used cardboard to create the base and rim of the vase.

After all the pieces were glued together, I gave both vases two more layers of paper mache. After it dried, I sanded off the glue residue that was sticking out. Since I decided to do thick coats of paint for a stucco-like aesthetic, the sanding was reversed
