Design Ideas Powerpoint 2016 Not Showing – Microsoft released some new features to one of its core programs, PowerPoint, this summer. Powered by artificial intelligence (AI), both features are designed to make anyone a better presenter, be it a student or an adult. Of course you want to take advantage of them!
PowerPoint Designer was created to make our slideshows more beautiful. Recognizing that most of us don’t have a degree in graphic design (or even very good taste in color choices!), the AI looks at our slides and offers design tips to make them better. To use this feature, simply select a slide that you think needs improvement and click the Design Ideas button in the Design tab. While the Designer has been around for a while, Microsoft has now added themed ideas that make launching a presentation easier than ever. Start a blank presentation, enter a few words on a slide, and the Designer will recommend a selection of new, high-quality photos that mirror the text on the slide, with complementary theme styles and colors. Featured photos are licensed for commercial use.

Once you’ve chosen a topic, you can start adding more slides with text and graphics. Once the graphic is on a slide, the Designer will appear and offer layout recommendations for it and accompanying text.

Finally, the Perspective Engine is also integrated into PowerPoint Designer and can now recognize when a slide contains a large number that can be difficult to understand. The Perspective Engine puts the number in context by automatically supplementing the text with the appropriate perspective to help your audience better understand the slide. So when you write “The size of Afghanistan is 652,232 km²”, the slide adds “about the size of Texas” to help your viewers understand better.
Design themes are now available in PowerPoint for Windows, Mac, and on the web for Office 365 subscribers Perspective Engine is currently only available for Office 365 subscribers.
Now that your presentation is beautiful, it’s time to practice your presentation. To help with this, Microsoft will introduce Presenter Coach. Presenter Coach provides on-screen guidance on “pace, inclusive language, use of profanity, extra words [such as ‘mmm’ or ‘aah’} and culturally insensitive phrases.” You can also tell if you are just reading your slides (big no-no!). At the end of each training session, a detailed report with indicators for additional practice is also provided (see example below).
Available in PowerPoint for the web later this summer, this new feature will be of great benefit to everyone, but especially to students who need practice and feedback on how best to present.

When you add content such as text, images, or graphics to a slide, Design Ideas intelligently analyzes it and provides you with multiple design options in a fraction of a second. This can be incredibly useful for those times when you are looking at a blank slide and wondering how to improve its appearance.
Whether it’s rearranging your points in visually appealing ways or adding complementary icons and images, Design Ideas has a knack for bringing out the best in your slides, often in ways you might not have considered. It’s about reducing the burden on your shoulders and giving you a head start in the design process.

Sometimes more is not always better. While Design Ideas can be an assistant to jazz up your presentations, there are times when you might find the function more of a distraction than a useful tool. Perhaps you are creating a presentation that requires a very specific template or corporate style that Design Ideas does not complement. Instead of stimulating creativity, it can continue to offer inappropriate suggestions that you constantly have to reject, disrupting your work flow and concentration.
And let’s not forget computer resources – sometimes enabling additional features can slow down your workflow, especially on older computers. Disabling Design Ideas can simplify PowerPoint on your device, ensuring a smoother process as you build your presentation.
STEP 1: Click the File tab > Options > General submenu. Here you can disable the Design Ideas feature.
If you decided to skip the Design Ideas feature, don’t worry! PowerPoint still offers many tools to create compelling presentations. You can use built-in templates or find professional ones online that fit your topic or industry.

Alternatively, get creative! Choose fonts, colors and layouts that reflect your brand. If consistency is key, Slide Master lets you customize your slide layout and background for a cohesive look.
For visual appeal, explore SmartArt graphics for charts and graphs. You can also add videos, animations and other media to enhance your presentation.
Remember, the best presentations combine simplicity with storytelling, bringing data to life and engaging your audience with a compelling narrative.
Mastering the features of PowerPoint while adding your own style is key to creating a presentation that stands out. It’s not just about disabling features, it’s about customizing them to suit your needs.

Even with auto-design ideas turned off, don’t forget PowerPoint Designer. You can also use it manually on specific slides for a bit of AI-driven inspiration when needed.
Finally, take a look at the Advanced category in the options menu. Here you will find a lot of settings to control how text boxes, images and more interact. With these controls, you can shape the automatic functions to perfectly match your style and preferences.
