Hold Shift and drag the lower right corner to resize it until it completely covers the empty space on the right. (Hold shift to keep the aspect ratio of the image while resizing it.)

Note: I like to use the thumbnails in the left pane to see what the space looks like.

If you are a perfectionist, you can optionally reduce the hanging part of the image if you want by going to “Format” → “Reduce”. However, it is not necessary.

The above method of adding images is more suitable for landscape images. If you have a vertical image, you can try using 2 or more images instead to hide the empty space.
