Creating Custom Cards In Cricut Design Space: Step-by-step Guide
The ability to upload your own photos gives you a lot of freedom to create whatever you want with your Cricut. You can upload anything from simple flat jpeg images to complex multi-vector files and Cricut Design Space will automatically process them for you to print, cut, print or use in your Cricut project!
To upload any image to Cricut Design Space, first open Cricut Design Space in a web browser. Click the green “New Project” button in the upper right corner to create a blank project.
At the bottom of the tool on the left side of the project is an “Upload” icon. Click this to open the download page.
You can then upload a base image (a single-layer image such as .jpg, .gif, .bmp or .png) or a vector image (a multi-layered image such as .svg or .dxf).
How To Use Cricut Pens On Greetings Cards
I created a simple image in Adobe Illustrator and saved it as a jpg and svg file so I can show you how to load a base image and a vector image into Cricut Design Space.
Most of the images you see online are stock images, meaning they are flat, one-line images. They can have many colors and even look 3D, but the actual image is made up of pixels of different colors that give the appearance of shading or depth. These one-line images can be created in programs like Adobe Photoshop, PicMonkey, Canva, and other simple image editing programs. Photos from a phone or camera are also original, horizontal photos.
You can upload .jpg, .gif, .bmp and .png files to Cricut Design Space and they will all load as one layer.
Here’s how to upload a base image. On the Cricut Design Space upload page, click the green and white “Upload Image” button.

Then drag and drop the image file into the window or click the green and white “Browse” button to open the image file.
After you select the actual image to upload, a preview will appear on the left and ask you to select the image type. You can choose between:
I chose “Simple” for this example because it’s a simple design. Then click the green “Continue” button.
The next step is to “frame” the image to ensure that only the parts you want to cut out will be included in your project. There are three basic tools you can use to process an image:
How To Upload Images To Cricut (2024)⋆ Extraordinary Chaos
I use “Select and Delete” for about 90% of the images I upload to Design Space; he is very strong and very smart! For this example, I clicked on the background of the image and completely erased the background!
I kept clicking on the center of each star to erase the data from the stars and then I was done. When you have deleted all the parts of the image that you do not want to crop, click on the “Continue” button.
The next step is to decide what type of image you have and give it a name. You can save the uploaded image as a Print & Cut Image or as a Cut Image. If your original photo has details (like a photo of your kids that you want to print first and then cut out, or something where color is important), save it as Print and Cut. If you want to cut out just the shape, you can save it as a cutout.
The uploaded image will appear in the Recently Uploaded Images section at the bottom of the upload page. Just select the uploaded image and click the green “Insert Image” button to add it to your project!

Vector images are image files with multiple layers, usually created in a program such as Adobe Illustrator. In this example, the left lobe of the heart with the stars is one layer, so I can cut it out of the blue material, and the lines are divided into two. All the other lines are in one layer so they can be cut from the red material and the rest of the lines are a different layer so they can be cut from the white material.
You can upload .svg and .dxf files to Cricut Design Space and they will all be loaded as multiple layers, with each graphic or color separated into separate layers in the Design Framework.
Here’s how to upload a vector image. On the Cricut Design Space upload page, click the green and white “Upload Image” button.
Since vector image files contain all the details of the image within the file itself, Cricut Design Space can automatically process these images for you without you having to do anything!

Just name your image and add tags if you want, then click the green “Save” button.
Select an uploaded image from the Recently Uploaded Images section and click the green “Insert Image” button to add it to your project!
You will notice that when you insert the original image will appear black like the heart on the left and the vector image will appear in whatever color was used in the original vector file. The original image will be the layer toolbar on the right, and the vector image will be separated into layers or colors.

You can see that the heart is the same color, but each “shape” is automatically shaded in one of three colors (red, white, and blue). In Cricut Design Space, the different colors act as “layers” so that when you cut that design, it will automatically separate.
