It’s time to change that!

All presented table layouts that you are about to see are made with standard MS Office PowerPoint tools only. You don’t need any special software, just a little inspiration. Let’s take a quick look at how to refresh tables.
Below you can see a standard chart comparing three product features created in PowerPoint. If you use the standard table style, it looks like this – black lines and a grid that fills the white cells:
Here is an example of how such a table can be laid out in several steps so that it appears consistent and easy to read and remember.
The best part took me 5-10 minutes using colors, basic shapes and a few simple symbols. So don’t worry, you don’t need to have deep design skills to get the same results.

Below you can see four easy steps to follow. Even if you don’t feel like a graphic designer, you can do it :).
Table cell borders separate the contents of your table cells. They are much less than the content. So it’s wrong to make them solid black like in the example. Make them look less important by replacing the high-contrast black bars with light gray (or any other color that suits your style, gray is one of the most neutral colors). If you have wide table margins, you can remove the borders entirely. Here are two examples of this type of change:
To edit the scope of a table, click on the table itself and select it from the PowerPoint top menu.
The next step is to improve the headers. Adding a simple arch to the back of the table will do the trick.

Then adjust the colors of the added shapes. Choose the colors according to the purpose of the presentation slide:
Don’t forget to make sure the title text is still legible after adding colors. Check the contrast – if necessary, change the header font from black to white.
If you have a few extra minutes and want to take your tables to the next level, spice them up with symbolic symbols. Using icons related to concepts and ideas creates a strong visual association. This will help your audience focus on the information you want to present to them.
In the product table example below, the three functions have been replaced by simple flat icons – for security, performance measure and cogs representing the product.

To increase visual power, I changed the third column to have separate yes/no values, but check/uncheck icons.

By adding these small illustrative photos, you can focus people’s attention on the points you want: whether you want to highlight the functionality of the product, the status of the project or the numerical values.
Perhaps there is a key piece of information in the table that needs to be displayed in the context of other data in the table. Make this key value stand out. The easiest thing is to make the text or number bold or use a different color. However, to make it more visually appealing, I suggest other ways to highlight it:
