As children, preparations for Diwali in our family would begin a few weeks before the actual festival. The atmosphere in the house and in the city market will become gloomy at the same time. People are naturally motivated to create memories by decorating your home inside and out. However, for those living outside India, this may be a little different.
Diwali 2023 Decoration Ideas At Home
Outside India, Diwali is not celebrated by the majority of people. There is not much enthusiasm for Diwali outside the home or in the market. However, we make every effort to convey and pass on our cultural traditions to our children and grandchildren. We want them to have the same childhood memories as us.
Homemade Diwali Decoration Ideas: Celebrate With Signature Style
Every Diwali, I try to keep the kids excited with all the decorations, lights and firecrackers. Now they look forward to it every year. Although busy schedules don’t allow time to implement all the ideas presented here, do what you can. There is something better than doing nothing. I’m sharing some ideas from home Diwali decorations that you can use as a whole or in pieces that suit you.
Diwali is the festival of lights. Outdoor decorative lighting was my husband’s responsibility and he really did it, attracting the attention of everyone in the neighborhood. The photos don’t do justice to the effort but the overall impact of the lighting is breathtaking.
He used a professional installer for the ceiling lights, which cost about $500. He can do the remaining lighting himself as it can be safely accessed using a regular household ladder. For highways and light pole loops, he uses programmable LED string lights. He decided to use LED mesh lights for tree trunks, house columns, and large trees. LED string lights are often used to create a pyramid shape around the light pole.
Children love helping with the Diwali decorations, making it a family project. The boy was busy arranging the nails for the string lights while the middle school student came up with his idea and showed it to his father on the stairs.

Please ensure that you are using a proper GFCI protected circuit to power the light and take electrical hazard precautions when installing the light.
In Indian tradition, the main door has a special significance. Many Indian traditions revolve around decorations and performing various rituals at the entrance of the house or pooja room. The same applies to Diwali decorations.
During my recent visit to India. These are some of the usual things I get from India every time I visit. Diya refers to the earthen lamp used in the Indian subcontinent. Today, you can buy decorative DIYs in most major cities in the US at Indian grocery stores. It’s also available on Amazon if you don’t have time to visit a local store.
After much research, I decided to use artificial flowers I found on Amazon. I am pleased with the overall quality, feel and look of the flowers. I also used some fresh flowers from my garden and local stores. The lamp was purchased from Pier1 Imports.

You have the option of making Rangoli with colors and flowers. Because I have small children, the powder color may not be beautiful. So I used a simple design that can be done quickly in 10 to 15 minutes with a mix of natural and artificial flowers.
Did you notice the url in front of Rangoli? Urli, a copper bowl for holding candles and floating flowers, adds another dimension to festive or ethnic decorations. It breathes life into your static decorations by bringing them to life with floating candles and flowers.
Next is the entrance lobby, this is the first place visitors can see the interior of their house. It creates a first impression and anticipation to see what else is in store. It will convey a festive atmosphere in your home while making you want to come in and immerse yourself in the festive spirit. The foyer décor is presented here using a central Ganesh statue sitting on a medallion table runner and surrounded by decorations made of bronze artifacts and ornamental candle holders of tea lights.
I used existing bangles as candle holders, which are inexpensive and a great way to add an Indian touch to your decor. I have a large collection of bracelets so I borrowed some from here to decorate my tea lights.
Diwali Decoration: Final Touches For A Diwali Ready Home
The Ganesh idol was gifted to us by my brother-in-law. Here, I have used a copper bowl as the urlis. To add urlis as decoration, you do not need to buy or use copper bowls. You can use a shallow bowl with a flat surface to create the same effect.
In the above picture, I have used kundan rangolis to decorate the floor. Also, you can use Rangoli designs as shown below. In my case, with a small child running around, it only took a few hours.
Inside the house, you can add a little decoration in various places to change the look of the house and make it more lively. For example, I decorated the coffee table in my living room with candles and flowers.
You can easily tell I’m a huge fan of Pier1 Imports. Most of the items in this decor are from that store. Whether you are looking for a tablecloth, or trays and candles, all items from Pier1 Import I have collected over time. I constantly move them around the house to create new decorations using different combinations.

I have a very good collection of rails and trays. They are my weakness. So, whenever I see a cool designer item, I tend to buy it for later use. The tray provides a defined space and a point of interest, allowing me to focus on a limited space. Runners add another texture to the space and help colors contrast and enhance other decorative elements. I have also used kundan rangolis as fillers between spaces to give an ethnic touch.
Another example is the decoration of the fireplace, which is often the focal point of the living room in an American-style home. You can create a beautiful ethnic decor by placing some artifacts on the fireplace and in the space right in front of the fireplace.
Here, I have used a combination of three independent elements to create a face with the overall purpose of representing different Indian ethnic elements. I used two elephant heads beautifully decorated with Nettipattam combined with bronze musical instrument artifacts. I fell in love with the adorable Nettipattam elephant head during my visit to Kerala and couldn’t resist adding it to my collection. I love the authenticity they add to the spaces I work with.
It’s a combination of diyas, kunda rangolis, fresh flowers with carefully selected locations and creative hubs that anyone can assemble from scratch. Both the Pearls & Twigs Glitter Placemats and the Beaded Glitz Silver Placemats are available at Pier1 Imports.

The last but most important place to decorate the house for Diwali is the pooja room and temple. Laxmi pooja is the most important component of the entire Diwali celebration, performed in the pooja room of the temple. My family moves every few years due to the nature of my husband’s work. So, even though I wanted a private pooja room, I now have to share it with the office.
Hence, I used handcrafted wooden temples and Rajasthani work with suitable backdrops. This backdrop uses tulle embellished with peacock feathers, bandhanwar pearls and pearl strings. The end of the tulle was tied off using bronze elephant diyas. This setting amplifies the pooja angle.
The door to the pooja room, which I share with my home office, was also decorated with bandanas and flowers. Try adding small details like satiya stickers and maha-Laxmi footprint stickers. Swastika is associated with Ganesha, and the footprint of maha-Laxmi is associated with the goddess of wealth and prosperity. These small details will enhance the effectiveness of your decoration.
