Wall Paint Ideas With Tape – I’m always looking for fun (and cheap) ways to make my apartment more unique. One of my favorite apartment upgrades is painting! Although some people don’t like the process of painting walls – basically repainting when subletting – I still think it’s a quick, easy and cheap way to make a big difference to the look of your home.
I came across this image of an accent wall from CB2 a while back and completely fell in love.

The CB2 wall is created using homemade wallpaper (you can read about it here), but I decided to paint my stripes directly on the wall.

Anyway, since I painted my accent wall last summer, I’ve noticed so many other bloggers adding similar geometric striped walls to their homes. I’ve listed a couple of my favorites below. They use wooden panels to create the look of solid 3D stripes instead of different paint colors. I love it! It’s such a cool way to add interest to a space and I can’t wait to try it out when I finally leave this rental life behind.
To be honest, I didn’t use anything special to draw the stripes – just an inspiration picture, masking tape, paint, a tape measure and a pencil/pen. Halfway through painting I ran out of masking tape and started using masking tape instead of buying extra because like I said, I’m lazy. Masking tape works a lot better though, so make sure you have a few rolls on deck.
Just as a side note, when I did this project, this wall, I had no idea I was going to blog so I didn’t have many pictures of the process. I took a couple to add to this post to help explain, but obviously the stripes are already done. Hopefully future mockups will still be useful, but feel free to ask any questions in the comments!
Start at the top left corner of the wall and extend the tape down and to the right. Make sure you keep the tape as straight as possible – don’t let it bend or bend. For some of the longer lines, I had to cut the tape into smaller pieces to keep the tape from twisting. You don’t have to worry about the angle at which you place the tape as long as the tape is straight.

2) After completing the first row of ribbon, measure from the edge of the ribbon with a tape measure.
I wanted the diagonal strips to be quite thick, so I measured 10 inches and marked a straight line at the end of the tape. Continue like this along the entire length of the ribbon. I resized my stripes – the horizontal stripes are 4.5 inches and the vertical stripes are 6 inches, but you can make them all the same width if you want. It’s all personal choice.
Remember that your measurement is from the inside edge of one piece of tape to the inside edge of the other. Make sure you always place the tape outside the marked lines so they are the same.
The process is not difficult, it just takes a little time. When applying stripes, refer to your inspiration image often. This will help you make sure you are sticking to the pattern you intended. It also helps to back up the wall from time to time to see the image in its entirety. A few times my lines started to wobble a bit, but I was able to fix that pretty quickly by stepping back to get a full view of the wall after I taped each piece of tape.

As you can see, I ran out of masking tape quite early in the project. Definitely poor planning on my part, so take it from me, get plenty of rolls of masking tape ready. 0/10 recommends using masking tape. Also, make sure your masking tape is the same width (I used 1 inch) or your stripes will be weird.
Seriously, run your hand over all the pieces of tape to make sure they are firmly stuck to the walls with no bubbles or protrusions. This will help keep the lines clear.
6) Paint the wall the color of your choice. I used Satin Black in a satin finish from Behr (Home Depot).
I painted the entire wall with a brush strip by strip or sometimes section by section. I definitely recommend using a brush over a roller if you have textured walls like mine. The brush makes it easier to control where the paint goes and prevents paint from getting under the tape.

*Bonus Tip: To get absolutely perfect lines on ANY type of wall, paint the strips the original wall color first. This helps to “stick” the tape to the wall and any paint that gets under the tape will be the same color as the wall. Got it? After that the coat will dry,
Stripes with a new color. I would still recommend using a brush or a small roller. A large roller will pick up too much paint on the tape, making it difficult to tell where the stripes should be.*
Wet, you can remove the tape. This will prevent the paint from drying on the tape and peeling later.
Because I didn’t “seal” the tape with the original wall color, I had a few spots where the gray paint got under the tape. It mostly happened on the masking tape areas, and even then it was only a couple.

The whole painting process took me 2 days to do by myself, but it definitely takes less time if you have someone to help you. After the tape peels off, the wall is tinted and the paint dries…enjoy! Treat yourself to a new blanket or rug to match your space. You deserve it (and so does your room)!
I loved this accent wall last year and I always get so many compliments. The funny thing is that everyone who sees it always asks me if it’s wallpaper. I think that means I did a pretty good job of making it look professional. *hair blowing*. I’m moving soon, so I’ll be painting over the stripes, but I’ll stick around to see what I do in the next apartment. Tip: I think bigger is better!

One of the most popular elements in building the perfect mom’s nursery is a stunning accent wall! There are so many ways to do this, including decorative wallpaper, a wooden ship, picture frames and many others. For my son’s nursery, I originally wanted to put cute patterned wallpaper behind the crib. However, this plan was quickly scrapped when it became clear to me that the texture of the orange peel of chewing gum on my walls would not be suitable for wallpapering. Instead, I decided to paint my own geometric pattern directly on the wall to accent the room.

Unlike other methods, painting the walls is advantageous because (1) it is cheaper than buying expensive wallpaper, (2) it is easy to paint over if you are told to remove the picture, whereas wallpaper requires a more complicated process, and (3) you You can choose the colors and designs that best suit your style!
The first step is to paint an accent wall in the main color of your choice. If you already have the color you want, you can move on to the next step!
For this project, our main wall color for the room was Behr Ultra White Metal in an eggshell finish. To brighten up the accent wall a bit, we used Behr Ultra Silent White (which is still gray despite the name).
To paint the wall, use Frog Tape to tape the areas around the wall to prevent any mistakes. We recommend using the 1.88″ delicate face tape because it’s wider (which helps avoid mistakes) and won’t peel off the existing paint. Then paint the wall with a foam roller.

If you don’t create your design as you go, it will be the most tedious but important part of the entire project. If you have graphic design experience, the best way to create your design is to draw the wall to scale in a program like Adobe Illustrator and create the design to the exact dimensions. This will make it a lot easier when you draw the design on your actual wall, as you will have all the dimensions and lengths ready. You can make sure that everything
