Here’s an easy DIY project to make a set of plant coasters using air-dried clay and some flowers. This makes a perfect hostess gift when you’re looking for personal handmade ideas.
You don’t need a lot of supplies either! All you need is air-dried clay, a few flower stems or leaves, something to roll out the clay, and circles to cut out and paint. You don’t have to be super crafty either!!
This month’s craft association theme was air-dried clay. Wait until you see all the creative projects the girls came up with this month! We loved Regina’s mud wall pockets! She does amazing work with clay and cement in her DIY projects.
First, prepare a place to make the coaster. I like to use a silicone mat to roll the clay. That way it won’t stick to the counter and will be easier to handle. If you don’t have a mat, try parchment paper or waxed paper to prevent sticking.

Don’t make the clay too thin. Keep it at least 1/4 inch thick. Clay shrinks when it dries.
You will also need to make the clay uniform so that the coasters have the same thickness. If it is difficult to do this visually, you can place wooden dowels or skewers on both sides of the clay to act as a guide when rolling it.
To make the coaster circles, use a round cookie, cookie cutter, or glass. Be sure to cut a circle large enough to fit the glass.
Once I cut the coasters, I had to smooth the edges and touch up any scratches in the clay.

This was easy, just dip your fingertip in water and trace the area you need help with with your wet finger.
To add a botanical pattern to the clay coasters, I used three different artificial stems and a bouquet of dried flowers.
Find a part of the stem that gives a good impression. Next, place them on top of the clay circle and press gently to keep their shape.
I covered the flowers with a roller. You need to be gentle here too…you need very little pressure to make a good impression.

The great thing about working with clay is that once you’ve made your boo boo, all you have to do is roll the clay back into a ball and start over.
My favorite print was made with fern leaves. A set of fern piles would be great!
I used small dried flowers for one of the coasters, but some of the flower seeds remained. I had to use a toothpick to remove the seeds. In some pieces, I simply removed the top part of the clay.
After making the print, let the clay dry. Place the coasters on the parchment and set them aside. Clay can also be placed at very low temperatures (200°) to speed up the drying process.

You can tell when the clay is completely dry because it will turn white as it dries.
The coaster was painted with brown chalk paint to maintain a natural feel.
There are several ways to paint flowers on coasters: watercolor, acrylic, chalk, and pen.
Use watercolors for the coaster set. It was watercolor so it was very easy to work with! I used paint pens on another clay project, which was a little more difficult in my opinion.

For this part I went outside to the garage to use the spray paint. You should never do this inside your home as it will create smoke.
I added 4 small felt pads to the bottom of the coaster to keep it from scratching. I already had a set on hand. Silicone pads and cork pads are also available, so you can use those as well.
