How To Get Great Powerpoint Design Ideas (with Examples)
Take the time to use your company’s official color scheme when importing your theme, or if you don’t have one, create your own color theme using Canva or Adobe Color Pickers.
You can find amazing royalty free images from Unsplash or Pexels. So start with these two sites instead of searching for images on Google.
There are hundreds of great icons available in Microsoft PowerPoint. You can click on the Insert ribbon and look for the Icons button. These icons are a great way to add a nice touch to your PowerPoint slide.
This means that all slides must have the same format and layout. If you’re creating a presentation and pulling slides from many different presentations, spend some time reformatting them so they all have the same overall look.
How To Make A Powerpoint Presentation
If you’re a Fortune 500 company, chances are the corporate brand has worked with a design agency like Duarte to create a premium corporate template out of the box.
The rule of thumb I follow is one font for the titles and one font for the additional text on the slide.
A very simple way to enhance bullet points is to take them and place them horizontally on a slide. Then add a small icon to each idea. It’s a much more elevated look (and so easy to do!)
This means thinking about what you want the reader to pay attention to and what should stand out on the page. Then organize the information on the slide in a way that makes sense and is easy to follow. Usually, in practice, this means that text or larger ideas are at the top of the page and smaller details or double clicks at the bottom of the page.

Draw thin lines to create separation between page elements. A pro tip is to hold down the Shift key to keep the lines straight. If there are two different graphics on a slide, I’ll use thin lines in between to create separation.
In the NYT example below, the thin white lines add a nice, whimsical touch. It would still be very well organized and easy to read without the line. However, the line gives the slide a little more structure.
You don’t need to fill every inch of your slide with content or images. Leave space for text. Leave a small gap in the slide.
Or just look at the slide below as an example of using whitespace. If you’re not used to using the space, it takes time to get used to it.

If you need to add logos to your slide, remember to find the highest resolution images on Google. Your presentation will look much more professional and polished. Attention to detail increases.
This also applies when you search for other images on Google. But if you remember my design tip from earlier, don’t start using Google Images because there are much better sites out there to find an awesome image.
Use a dark color if the background is white. If the background is dark, use a light color. Never use yellow text on a white background as it will not be legible.
A tip I got from a friend at the Presentation Guild was to use a web tool like The Accessible Color Generator to make sure the colors you use are readable by people with low vision or color blindness.
Multiplan Powerpoint Presentation Template
Use tables to organize your content. I mean that literally. Draw a table (4×4, 5×5, etc.), arrange the contents, and then delete the table. Now your slide will have this hidden structure that makes everything on the page feel balanced.
It’s the year 2023. Everything is digital. People read on their laptops, iPads or widescreen monitors. It still amazes me when I see a PowerPoint presentation created with a 4:3 aspect ratio. It looks like something from the 90s.
Of course, there are some situations where people want to see a hard copy of the presentation, and you could argue that 4:3 is better. But I don’t buy it.
If you can, always go for simplicity over something complicated. If the slide looks too full, edit some of the content. Or split a slide into two or three or even four slides.

If you need to include a lot of text on a slide due to legal or regulatory requirements, use columns to make the text easier to read. Think of printed newspapers or even magazine columns. The text never stretches across the entire width of the paper. Same idea here.
This is not a hard and fast rule. However, if the slide content is contained within the slide, it will look more professional and clean. If you’re going to push the limits, do it deliberately.
Sometimes it’s easier to show an idea with a diagram than to explain it in text. If you decide to use a chart, try drawing it using the basic shape tools built into PowerPoint.
PowerPoint SmartArt looks very amateurish unless you know how to mask it well. There’s definitely a stigma against SmartArt, and I’ve seen many branding guides and PowerPoint presentation templates that warn against using it.
Guide To Using Images For Presentations
However, if you strip it down to just the bare essentials and make the text 8-point Calibri (or whatever your body text is), it might work:
It’s like going to a thrift store. Just because you find something interesting doesn’t mean you have to buy it and use it.
Use a grid to help align elements on the slide so there is some basic structure.
When trying to find an image that represents an idea, don’t settle for the first image you find. Keep looking until you find something more unique.

Here are three ways to show the future. Think about which one you would prefer and why.
There are many better alternatives for adding images to your presentation. Think about icons. Think about the photos.
If you have a slide that will display a lot of logos, use PowerPoint’s alignment feature to help. Notice how well each line lines up when the logos are on the slide below. Notice how the second row of logos is slightly offset from the top row.
If you’re working on a presentation, don’t forget to have a little fun with the design. It doesn’t have to be all work or all play. I love that Krispy Kreme uses their products to highlight the 5 pillars of their contribution work.

It’s playful, it’s whimsical. And most importantly, it works! Here’s another example of using a donut as an expanded donut chart.
Help your readers navigate the show by adding a simple agenda like the one below from PVH. Add it before each section to break up different chapters or sections.
I really like the treatment of texts in the chapter. It is bold and clear. Other previous chapters are in light gray. Still reading, but it’s clear where we’re going.
Most slides are best clean and simple. This means no extra shadows or weird lighting effects on page elements. That’s one less thing you have to think about and keep consistent throughout your presentation. Also, the shadows just feel dated.

“Eyebrow Identification” is the text above the title slide. This could be a chapter title or something that helps the reader understand where the content of the slide fits into the structure and organization of the overall presentation.
For example, the brow ID in the NYT slide below is “COMPLICATION AS A DRIVER OF PRODUCT GROWTH” and all pages in the section share the same brow ID.
If you’re talking about digital or social media, for example, show it on the slide as you would see it
