The input didn’t work at all; it wasn’t clear how to get to the front door and the gate was in the wrong place for a curb. They wanted to add beauty and functionality.
The old entrance had a short concrete wall and an old wooden fence. We took all of this out and opened up the entire area for maximum traction on the trail. Concrete is poured onto the stairs and landing and washed with acid. We didn’t want to change the old Portland look (or function!) of the Tudor-style porch, so some of the concrete was touched up with paint. Yes, it will need to be repainted occasionally. However, it is almost impossible to match old concrete with new concrete, so a complementary color can be a great solution. The small setting of the front entrance creates a welcoming feeling.

I like to work with many angles because they almost always require out-of-the-box solutions. This had an additional unused footpath and the grass was used as a passage for local children on their way to school.
We removed the sidewalk, pushed the front gate and installed a lavender fence so the homeowners could reclaim this side yard. The customers say that this solution worked great and that no one is cutting corners anymore. With a new lawn installed, the side yard lawn can become a play area for the kids.

Check out the raised dog bed in the back, happy pups. Plants include sword fern, Japanese forest grass and a single Japanese maple. Oh, and a fish planter that teases strawberry plants. Too cute.
The dining table and concrete base were already there, we expanded them with a simple sun sail and some planters to soften the garage wall. A cheap update.

As a designer, the ideas in my head are exciting to create a realistic landscape that a family will enjoy. It is even more fun when customers use their outdoor space so much that they add their own expression to it, such as a cloud wall from a previous project or the chairs made from whiskey barrels. This family embraced it when they created a mural that they attached to the inside of the fence. Although I had nothing to do with this creative work, I couldn’t resist taking a photo with the client to celebrate the completion of their landscape.
