Character Design Clothing Ideas – This works for drawing characters for story ideas you might have in your head or any picture you want the person you’re drawing to look great!
Let’s talk about aesthetics first. Beauty is just a very basic “look” or “vibe” that you want your character to have. Do they want to attract people with what they wear, or do they want to be invisible and ignored?
Character Design Clothing Ideas
I drew two teenagers that I wanted to appear stylish, confident and cool. Here is a concept sketch I did with some basic color blocking.

Practicality is choosing the right clothing style for your character based on the mood you choose.
In this picture, I’m painting these two teenagers in Asian street fashion, so it makes sense to paint them in modern, loose, form-fitting clothing. I also make sure to use reference photos of people in this style so I can put my own spin on it.
Remember to find reference photos for everything! No matter how realistic or cartoonish your style is, your character’s clothes will look good if they are based on reality in terms of how different clothes hug the body, where the seams are, etc.
The last thing to consider is personality! Personality is thinking about how your character’s clothing can tell a story. Think about the setting in which your characters are dressed, or how they wear their clothes. For example, I drew the female character here with her jacket off her shoulders to suggest that she might be a little mischievous or immature.

Accessories like jewelry can also be great story tools. I took the two characters here matching necklaces to imply they are close – either best friends or dating.
Now I added another story with characters made on the girl’s jacket and the boy’s key chain. This character can be the logo of a fashion brand they wear or from a TV show they love!
Now, let’s say you’re working on something more than just a picture – you have an idea in your head for a book, video game, cartoon – whatever, really – and you want your character designs to be stronger
Here, I drew two characters: the one on the left will be the evil queen and the one on the right will be the good-hearted prince.
Since Character Design Has Been Reduced To Talk About The Amount Of Clothes A Character Is Wearing. Here’re Some Improvements They Made To The Character Design [spoiler Media]
I already talked about the importance of aesthetics, practicality, personality, and the use of references, which I made to create their basic character designs – But now, I will go a little deeper.
How do I make the queen look evil? Many character designs for villains or evil characters include sharp shapes because we associate them with the risk of injury. To make my queen character look ferocious and scary, I exaggerated every edge of her body and clothes to look really sharp. Sure, the hairstyles and clothes don’t really make sense, but it’s okay to push the boundaries to convey meaning for your character design.
Now for the prince! How can I make it look like a kind person just by its design? Usually, round shapes are used in character designs to imply softness or friendliness. I made it smaller and more rounded in body shape so it would be less dangerous. I also removed the sharper parts of his silhouette, like his blade and shoulder pads, to make him look strong, but not intimidating.
Now it’s time to color! I will color the prince and queen in the same three colors – blue, yellow and orange – to show how you can use color to emphasize your character traits.

Most good character designs use a color scheme that has one central color and at least two or three complementary colors. So, when you’re coloring your character, think about where you want your audience’s eyes to be drawn first.
I wanted the queen’s color scheme to be mostly orange, so I made sure to use that for her spiky hair, dress and piercing eyes.
“Bad” characters are also associated with dark colors or desaturated dark colors. I made the blue on the queen’s dress very dark and used pale blue and yellow on her skin, gloves and collar to create a nice contrast.
For a brave and noble prince, it is wise to use bright colors because they are friendly and attractive. I used blue and orange as her two main colors and used yellow as an accent on the edge of her dress and small items in her hair.

That’s all I have to say about fashion design! It’s important to remember when drawing that nothing comes out perfectly on the first try, so don’t give up if you struggle a little! It took me several tries before I settled on any of the designs you see here. Hello, my name is Anayansi, and today I’m going to give you a quick guide on fashion design and effective character dressing!
As artists, we all face problems/obstacles in the character creation process from time to time. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned professional, effectively designing fabric for your original creations is an invaluable skill to learn and practice. Fashion design, also known as character clothing in this guide, conveys personality, motifs, and can be a useful storytelling aid when properly considered. While everyone is different, here are some universal things I’ve learned not only from studies and research but from years of trial and error with my own work.
At the end of this guide, you will have a simple but solid understanding of the importance of proper fashion design and how to use color theory to enhance your designs.
Fashion has existed in every society since the beginning and it evolves with each individual. Beliefs, politics, religion, location, and local culture shape who wears what. Therefore, it is important, before starting to design clothes for the characters to wear, to consider the following:

When you ask yourself these questions, and similar questions, we can begin to paint a mental picture of the kind of character we want to be. For the purpose of this guide, I will be focusing a lot on western fashion trends, especially in the United States. But you can still apply some of this to your own works and cultural trends as you see fit!
Pre-planning is important so that we know exactly what type of clothes to order or design for the specific characteristics of our character. But before someone wears a dress, they need to decide why they are wearing it, where it will be worn, and how long the dress will be worn? Ensemble designs for characters can also include hair, makeup and accessories.
But first, we need to decide who we are dressing for. Going back to the previous section, what is your character? Let’s take my original character Lydia as an example:
Lydia is a twenty-year-old fashionista who loves bright colors and isn’t afraid to use clothes to show off her figure to her advantage. She is stereotypically feminine and likes to exceed the expectations of what she thinks is appropriate, especially when it comes to fashion conventions. She often accessorizes with bold statement pieces, like a pair of statement shoes or a statement necklace. Her style is sensible yet chic, and she loves to mix the old and the new!

I recently visited the place to take photos specifically for this tutorial to give a real life example of how you can mix and match outfits to create new looks for your character.
Croquis will help to determine how clothes cover our character. Knitting can also help us determine how we can make a garment, or allow us to see how certain pieces will look before we make final choices in the design process.
Since Valentine’s Day is coming up, I’ve decided to draw Lydia in a cute and flirty outfit, maybe for a formal night out or a dinner date. I focus on how color can affect the mood of an outfit and how it relates to character.

Color Theory may seem intimidating at first, but the more you experiment and learn which colors work together, the more creative dynamics you’ll be able to create in the clothes you design. Let’s look at the color wheel:
Hue is the actual color we physically see, and on the basic color wheel, there are twelve colors. All other known colors can be explained as a result of these two dozen colors.
Values (Light & Dark) define whether the color is muted or bright and can be changed by adding white or black.
Next, let’s start talking about the color scheme,
