Q: I liked your plaid dress so much that I went out of my way to buy the same pattern. I do display e in red and white ticking stripe. I just made the bodice and discovered it was 3-4 inches too big! Taking it on the side is too much work, so I take it on the back. But I’m sad that it’s not perfect.

Circle Skirt With 3 Pieces?

Here’s the thing. According to the measurements on the back of the pattern my bust and waist are size 16 and 18 so I cut a size 14. My waist is only a size 14. So why is size 14 so big?

I have encountered this problem before with both the New Look Pattern and the Free Burda Pattern. So my question is: How do I know what size to make if the pattern blanket measurements are so wrong? Do you have this problem with patterns?

A: Those are really good questions, Joe. For a long time I had to deal with modern patterns that fit like bags, which can be very frustrating when you spend so much time sewing them together! Bigger than too small, but still…

I’ll answer your questions, but first I’ll give you some pointers on cutting and sewing clothes that fit. And, everyone following along knows what we’re talking about, here’s the dress Joe mentioned:

Turns out it’s simple!

I love the ease of swing dresses – nothing clings or constricts, just soft material that flows to hide a pretty, muffin top. Definitely my kind of dress (and perfect for the upcoming holidays because you can eat all you want and never worry about the waistband feeling too tight!).

I made my dress midi length, but you could easily go knee length or even longer if you wanted! All you need to do is add some length to the free swing tunic pattern found here.

Note: All my patterns are women’s size L, made to fit a 38 in the bust. This model has a lot of room around the waist and is made for stretchy fabrics, so it fits an XL.

I used 2.5 yards of 60 inch wide knit (stretch) fabric. Be sure to wash and dry your clothes before you begin. Click here to download the swing tunic pattern.

Print it on 10 sheets of 8.5 × 11 paper. Be sure to print it at 100% or full size and check that the gray test square prints exactly 1 inch. Make the pages together without overlapping and taping. It will look like this:

Pattern Review: Nico Bias Cut Dress In Midweight Linen

The pattern, as written, makes a tunic. I added 18 inches of length to the pattern to make the dress. Since my fabric is quite stretchy, I cut about 6 inches off to make a midi length dress. Not all knit fabric stretches, so if you’re shooting for a midi-length dress (especially for someone taller than me – 5′ 3′) I think adding 18 inches will give you a good length. Adding 12-14 inches is enough if you are going for knee length. You can also lay your desired length of garment on the pattern and measure how much you need to add (be sure to account for the hem).

This is how I laid out my pattern pieces on my fabric. The solid lines show the actual pattern, and the dotted lines show where I cut the pieces to add 18 inches of length.

I cut the front piece above the fold and the back piece along the selvedge edges, meaning the seam is on the back of the dress. If you want to avoid the seam and cut the back on the fold, you will need 3 to 3.5 yards of fabric.

For complete sewing instructions, click over to the Swing Tunic post. The sewing process is the same for the dress and tunic; The only difference is the length.

Other than that, everything else is like a long tunic. Hope you enjoy this swing dress pattern!

Note: This is the fabric I used for this dress. It’s very soft and very stretchy, but a little lighter weight than I expected. It’s not obvious but the bra shows contours so a slip is needed.

Hello! I am a busy mother of five who loves to make things. Crafts, recipes, sewing, holiday projects: I’ve tried them all and you can too! I love easy projects that anyone can make. This time I decided to sew a wrap dress from a flannelette bed sheet from Big W 🙂

The floral pattern was beautiful, and I could only find solid colors or cartoon fabric in the spotlight. 😭

Easy Shift Dress Pattern (sewing Tutorial)

Below is the blueprint cover dress pattern we are using today. Feel free to adjust the length of the skirt or the width of the waist; Even though it’s a warp dress it’s accompanied.

We can make a wrap dress without using a pattern. With a water-soluble marker and ruler, draw the pattern directly onto the fabric.

Start with the back panel first. After cutting the back panel, use it as a template to draw the front panels.

To draw and cut the two front panels, fold the fabric in half from the inside, then trace the back panel onto the fabric. Check the blueprint again and make adjustments to the collar and one side of the skirt – otherwise the front and back panels are the same.

Cut the folded fabric at the same time, and we end up with two mirrored front pieces. You 🙂

To cut the collar faces, follow the collar of the front/back pieces along the collar then connect the lines 5cm along the shoulder on each side, and 5cm from the traced collar.

Here we sew the pockets on the two front panels. I had to separate this section into another post, so please follow along on how to sew pockets at the seam until step 8:

Place the front and back panels at the shoulders and stitch the fabric together along the shoulders from the inside.

Open the garment vertically at the shoulder and sew the sleeve by serging along the bottom red clips. Do the same for the other arms.

Now we sew the sides all the way – from the end of the sleeve to the edge of the skirt.

We’ll start with the right side (the side that doesn’t need the tie ribbon). Serge together all the way down – inside out – along the red clips, watch the pocket not serge closed.

When sewing the left side of the dress, add one of the ribbons at waist height.
