Furry Character Design Ideas – Fursona, or “sona” as described in the previous article, is a character that represents itself online, like an avatar. Some of us turn them into furs ourselves, others use them as mascots or symbols (e.g. Enzo, the mascot of British kit maker Faruku, or Matrices, the mascot of makes a famous suit/packer in the community!). Even for those who use their characters as symbols, we often see such characters (see Hex’s personal examples here and here)!
Of course! There are no limits! Some people, myself included, went through multiple iterations before finding what worked for us! Even then, you can have more than one at the same time!

Of course, plans and ideas are always adapting and changing! When I first started playing Riptide, it had five horizontal red stripes on its face. When I received the head costume from Maibey/KCCostumes, I realized the muzzle would be too small to fit all five. At this point, I also realized that many artists designed it with just three stripes, as shown below!

Just a title to be fair. Although some people make the distinction that fursona are the “most authentic” representation of themselves and their OCs are other characters they like or fursona they have lost interest/relationship with. Other terms include “main” and “secondary” fursonas, with most of the artwork usually found under main and secondary fursonas being takeovers you like, other character designs, or other Preliminary work has been retired.
I like a race or have/want a race that is “closed” or has rules, how does that affect my design ideas?
I’ll cover the subject of closed/open species in more detail later, but it’s important to note that some of these species are protected by copyright and others are protected by community rules. There’s nothing stopping you from creating a fursona that violates community rules (NOT copyright), but be aware that the community won’t be happy at all!
It could be an animal that you really like or something that you relate to. Maybe you’re a bit indecisive and want to combine your favorite creatures!

Do you have a favorite color? Why don’t you use it? Some people have made their favorite color the main element in all their main sonas (like purple in Muelin, Lupita and Kyovo – misswolfiee’s fursona). There are some great online resources for finding color palettes if you’re a bit indecisive, and if you’re stuck with patterns, why not turn to nature or art? Get inspired by what you love!
These are definitely important questions to ask! Some of us aren’t lucky enough to have the ability to hold a pencil and sketch out our ideas – we have the basics! But the fund is not personal and unique, and sometimes it comes with costs. Others may feel they lack the motivation to perfect their character!
Grab a pencil or an art board, design what you have envisioned and try out color schemes and patterns that you like and experiment! In different styles, your pallets may look better than the natural appearance of the species or animal you first envisioned may not be quite right! Continue refining! Take your time, test your ideas, come back later and keep working! If you are happy then congratulations, you are so lucky!
It’s best to only have a vague idea, or maybe you only have an idea of one race/skin color and not much else. You can commission an artist for a custom design or, better yet, a reference sheet of your character. Some points to note –

1. An artist cannot create a full custom body or multiple models of your character, just a full reference sheet with minimal adjustments – reference sheets can be expensive – on average from $50 to $150 per design! So you should look up artists and find someone whose style you like and start saving!
2. Not all artists work from written descriptions or scrapbook/mood board style commissions. Many artists ONLY work with visual resources (like finished character designs) and that’s their choice. Other artists may charge for work based on description. Why? Well, there is a high chance of errors and imperfections when working from client-supplied sources – small details missing or misplaced – which can cause additional stress for the artist!
3. I cannot stress this enough – NO SHADING REQUIRED ON THE REFERENCE PLATE – this is art that should be given to other artists to work on when you want them to do it for you and easily Choose colors and designs more completely.
4. The artist may never get your design perfect or your ideas may change during the creative process – talk to the artist regularly and sensibly – art is a process two-way!

You are flexible, you honestly don’t care what you get, you just know that you will find something that suits you somewhere. A good place to start is to find an artist you like or just a general search for a genre that interests you. Don’t rush into buying these, think of them as window shopping! There are a few different ways to purchase these specific designs/characters.
They are stored in many places like Furaffinity, DeviantArt or auction sites like Furbuy or Dealers Den. Take some time to think about what you like and dislike about your character and explore that online. Some of these auctions can easily run into the hundreds, so set clear limits on how much you’re willing to spend.
On sites like FurAffinity, pay attention to auction rules like MI (Minimum Raise) or what the model character’s current owner will let you with your once-favorite character – check Check to see if the terms are reasonable. Firstly. If you are the winner of the auction, please remember to pay for goods and services via Paypal to protect yourself in case you do not receive all the artwork/items!
These characters are usually cute little icons inspired by things around an artist or things they do based on their own interests. As the title suggests, they usually want a set price (usually no more than $50), once you buy the design it’s yours! It’s often great to have an idea of species, but be completely open to the design.

They can often be the most elaborate, especially if they include fur. Like the auction title, it needs to be exceptionally sharp. For example, the individual may not reveal the fur when they see it – they will either edit it themselves OR ask you to edit the design in some way to keep the fur intact, or ask you to change the name.
