The beauty of the planning process is that you can try different layouts before finalizing your design. “It takes minutes to tape this on,” says designer Sarah Richardson, “and you can see right away if you like the design before spending time making it permanent and painting it.”

Two Tone Walls: How To Paint Straight Lines

After choosing the shape, the next step is to choose the color palette. If you choose different shades of the same color family, the colors can complement your existing decor. You can also make a bold statement with eye-catching color combinations.

Painter’s tape creates the clean, sharp lines of your pattern. Choose a high-quality tape designed for delicate surfaces so it won’t damage your wall when removed. For most projects, 1 or 1 ½ inch wide tape will work, but complex designs with multiple line thicknesses may need larger tape sizes.

Choose an interior color that matches your base paint. Latex paints are often the best choice due to their durability and ease of cleaning. To achieve a flawless finish, you can also use built-in primer paint or a separate primer before the base coat.

Start with a clean, smooth wall surface. Fill any holes or cracks with putty and then sand smooth. If your design uses a different background color, apply the base coat and let it dry for at least 24 hours before taping.

Use a pencil to lightly draw where the tape will be attached to your wall. For more complex designs, a level or laser level can help you maintain straight lines and consistent angles. Always double check your measurements to avoid errors that could disrupt the symmetry of the pattern.

Carefully apply masking tape along your drawing lines, pressing the edges firmly to prevent paint from bleeding. With a sharp utility knife, cut the tape where the lines meet.

Once everything is taped perfectly, it’s time to paint the inside of the areas. Apply thin, even coats to prevent dripping; You may need two or three coats for best results. Wait for each layer to dry completely before moving on to the next.

When the paint is completely dry (usually after 24 hours), remove the tape at a 45-degree angle to prevent peeling. Use a small brush to smooth out any imperfections or bleeding edges.

Even with careful planning, challenges can still stand in the way of your painting project. Here are some common ones you may encounter.

If your wall is textured or has small imperfections, use a higher quality masking tape designed for textured surfaces. Apply extra pressure to the edges of the tape to ensure a good seal. For larger imperfections, consider covering the wall with foam to create a smooth canvas before starting your project.

If the paint runs under the tape, wait until it dries completely, then gently scrape off the excess with a razor blade. For minor imperfections, touch up the edges with a fine-tipped brush. If larger areas need correction, you may need to tape and repaint parts of the pattern.

Inconsistent color coverage can negatively impact the overall appearance of your design. If you notice inconsistencies, add thin, evenly spaced layers until the colors are more consistent.
