Design Competition For Students – The Barbara G. Laurie Student Design Competition was one of the highlights of the conference for both students and professional members. Originating nearly 20 years ago with only 3 schools, the competition now showcases the work of 40 S chapters from across the country participating in a two-day competition. At this year’s event, design teams must develop a program for a community-owned, mixed-use sustainable development, titled the “Black Cultural Resilience Community Center Zone,” with an emphasis on net-positive approach to culturally responsive design and development. ACSA member school sponsoring faculty are required to enroll students by completing an online registration form prior to submission by April 5, 2023. The competition is open to students from all ACSA full and candidate member schools , as well as ACSA associate member schools, including international member schools. Students are required to work under the direction of a faculty sponsor. Submissions will be accepted for individual as well as group projects. Teams must be limited to a maximum of three students. Students are invited to submit their study projects. Entries must be buildings, but can be of any program, of any size, in any location. Projects can be remodeling or adaptive reuse. Work must have been completed in a design studio or related class during the 2022-2023 calendar year. Projects completed in the spring of 2022 are eligible for submission, due to the change in the competition calendar.

Architects play an important role in addressing both the causes and effects of climate change through the design of the built environment. Innovative design thinking is key to creating architecture that responds to human needs for both work and pleasure, adapts to climate change projections, continues to support residents’ health and well-being despite natural and man-made disasters, and minimizes the contribution to further climate change through greenhouse gas emissions. Preparing today’s architecture students to imagine and create a climate adaptive, sustainable and carbon neutral future should be an important part and driving force for the design discourse.

Due to their longevity, new buildings must be designed to respond to climate change solutions and respond to their expected impact, in the second half of the 21st century and beyond. Like the COTE Top Ten Award for the developed work of design professionals, the COTE Top Ten for Students allows designs to be characterized in terms of 10 steps from community to water to health.

The AIA COTE® Top Ten Contest for Students is sponsored by the American Institute of Architects’ Committee on the Environment (AIA COTE®), in partnership with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). Each year, the competition recognizes ten exceptional student design studio projects that integrate health, sustainability and equity, judged against both the AIA COTE® Top Ten Award categories for Built Work and the AIA Framework for Design Excellence (now adopted as the foundation of professional practice and awards throughout the AIA). APA’s Department of Urban Design and Preservation, Division Council, and Student Representative Council of APA co-sponsor the Annual Student Planning and Design Competition, which invites teams of students pursuing graduate degrees in planning participate. The competition helps develop the next generation of urban planners and designers by focusing on a significant development area or area in the host city of the National Planning Conference and asking them to consider all of the steps planners and designers should take when developing plans and recommendations. Finalists present their proposals to a panel of judges in a public session at the National Planning Conference. By championing excellence in planning, promoting education, and empowering citizens, APA hopes to provide our students with the tools and support necessary to meet the challenges of growth and change.

We are excited to announce the location of the 2025 American Planning Association Student Planning and Design Competition. The site chosen is the Colfax & Federal Clover Leaf, a 46-acre parcel of land in Denver, CO, which will also host the 2025 National Planning Conference. This location is adjacent to Mile High’s Empower Field to the east and multi-family neighborhoods to the west.

Norwich University Holds Outdoor Classroom Design Competition For High School Students

The project site for the 2024 Student Planning and Design Competition is the New Nicollet Redevelopment, the former Kmart site in South Minneapolis, MN. This project site covers 10 acres of land between the Midtown Greenway, Lake St, 1st Ave and Blaisdell Ave.

On April 15, 2024, three student finalists presented to the jury at the NPC 24 Minneapolis public session. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology team took first place, followed by the University of Minnesota and the University of Illinois-Chicago. Congratulations to all finalists and honorable mentions!

Shaping The Future With Aiaoc Student Design Competition

Now in its sixth year, the 2023 competition challenges students to create planning and design recommendations on a proposed vision plan for the Logan Triangle area of Philadelphia’s Upper North District.

APA Urban Design and Preservation Division (UDP) volunteers reviewed and scored eleven submissions from a competing team. This preliminary jury selected three finalists — Arizona State University, the University of South Florida and the University of Memphis — to present to the final jury at the National Planning Conference in Philadelphia.

Christopher Rzomp, AICP, Chair of the UDP Division of Urban Design and Gensler City and Urban Design Leader, served as the final jury member, along with Eleanor Sharp, AICP, Executive Director of the City Planning Commission of Philadelphia, and Deborah Myerson. AICP, Member of the APA Council of Sections Executive Committee. The final jury selected the winning team after their presentations.

The Arizona State University student team — Dema Abdul Rahman, Lynn Elharaque, Brian Leyba, Kelsey Ouellet and Sarah Pimentel — won the 2023 competition. You can read their winning entry. Congratulations to all competition participants, finalists and winners!
