Living Room Ideas 4×4 – We’re back for another round of design suffering. Needless to say, designing can be difficult, so we’ve been getting a lot of requests (see Em’s Instastory Highlights for more). And we’re here to help alleviate the worry and thought of “no answer”… at least one answer. Today, we have three unprecedented conflicts: two are product/style conflicts and one is a positioning conflict. Arranging furniture can be really difficult, so we can always have trouble because we understand how stressful it can be. With that said, let’s put these aches and pains aside and start the weekend.

Our first crush was when Ray decided to purchase these stunning forest green velvet dining chairs (pictured below). How could he not, right? The only issue is that the rest of the living room/dining room is completely neutral, and adding these bold beauties throws the rest of the space out of visual balance.

Here are the photos Ray sent me of his place. It’s beautiful, but you can use some greenery sprinkled on the other side of the room to make these two spaces talk a little. Another issue is that her place is already pretty decorated, so spending a lot of money on something new isn’t something she wants to do. It is very understandable.

So I scoured the internet for all the forest greens and talked to the design team to find four that would easily fit in the living room. We think the next step would be to take out two of the larger pillows on the sofa (one with a dark pattern and a solid gray pillow) and replace them with a green jacquard pillow and a velvet lumbar pillow. In this way, we have green accents, velvet upholstery, and more variety in the size/shape of the cushions. Cushions can replace the tan and faux fur cushions on the accent chair by the fireplace. Then, for the final touch, Ray can replace that tan box on the ottoman with a green marble box. It creates more contrast and adds a different texture.

If Ray doesn’t want to go all forest green, he can play with a lighter grey-green tone. When products are in space, playability is key. But when you’re dealing with such a bright color, the idea is to keep it neutral (especially if you’re overdoing it) and balance out the parts on the eye.

Here’s another rectangular living room Ashley brought us. He and his partner have just moved into their “grown up house” and need help with that part. “How to save this room?” he asked. Well, this is our recommendation…

The chairs should be moved to another room, as the design team recommends moving the sofa forward and towards the left wall (facing the back wall). Fireplace (Ashley said the black cabinet is temporary so don’t worry about clutter). Then, depending on the rest of the space, one of the chairs can be placed in the corner, with a side table, the sofa is now a unique reading node. But a large plant in the corner looks just as large. Also, if you’re looking for a new sofa, consider a couch that’s a bit narrower and has more space between the floor and the bottom of the couch. This helps simplify the room.

Important note: Don’t feel that your sofa always has to be mounted to the wall. In fact, knowing that you have the ability to float your sofa in the middle of the room can help solve most positioning problems if you’re looking at a long, narrow space. This opens up other spaces that you can change without feeling cluttered or cluttered.

Bonus Round: Ashley asks what to do with the big blank walls in the space. We covered this in a previous article, but a nice large dipole or triptych would look great on the wall next to the fireplace, then on the back wall could be some kind of thin shelf or a large art shelf. You just want the two walls to not compete for attention and fear negative space.

In order to Many houses live in random niches. I’m not sure why, but when Jenalyn asks for help decorating her alcove, I know it can (hopefully) relate to a lot of people.

You don’t want to overdo the visual interest because it makes you feel overwhelmed. A neutral color palette is key unless the style of your home is different. Well, now that that’s out of the way, let’s move on to our two suggestions for Jenalin.

The first suggestion is to use all neutral/tonal clays that match each other, like the photos above by ceramicist Luke Estup. You want to make sure the pieces vary in size and shape so they look interesting and purposeful (not just piled up there until you find a better purpose). Also, be sure to consider the size of the niche. Anything too small or too big is lost.

The second point is similar to the first point, but it feels similar to how you arrange your open shelves in the kitchen. Choose a very simple color palette (we’re going more neutral for Jennalyn) and then play around with a variety of ships. Bowls, baskets, pots, vases, etc. Just make sure they’re not too crowded and have room to breathe. Remember to change the scale, height, shape and texture. Below, I’ve rounded up beautiful veins on a variety of budgets to inspire Jenali to ease her pain.
