Cricut Mug Design Ideas – With holidays like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day coming up, not to mention birthdays and summer fun, let’s see how you can use the new Cricut Mug Press to create all kinds of incredibly personalized coffee mugs! My favorite thing about these mugs is that the infused ink actually melts into the surface rather than sitting on top like vinyl or iron markers. That means these mugs are chip resistant, fade resistant, and dishwasher and microwave safe! Here’s how to create your own.

This is the most important step, because you get to decide exactly what you want to put on the cup. There are many pre-made images to choose from in the Design Space app, including individual designs that you can put on one side or wrap specially designed mugs to go around. You can also add more customization by adding text to an existing mug packaging design, using an uploaded image such as a logo or character, or even creating and uploading your own artwork.

Then I typed the words “artist at work” on one side and “water paint” on the other. Color Used: Cool Splashpad (Blue)

Step 2: Size your design to fit the mug, then use a Cricut machine to cut the design from the Infusible Ink transfer sheets.

You can use solid colors or take advantage of some of the beautiful patterned ink sheets. Load colored ink sheets onto a cutting bed. Be sure to mirror the design before you cut! Then press “go” and the machine will do its magic. Note that the ink will have a more vibrant color after it is heated.

If you are using a mug packaging design, it should already be perfectly sized for your mug; just make sure if it says “Large” use a 15oz cup; “Small” is a 12 oz. If you put an individual design on one side, it should not be larger than 3″ square. My ‘A’ is 2.80.” The maximum design size for a complete package is as follows: 12 oz cup – 8.75″ x 3.79″, 15 oz cup – 8.75″ x 4.25″.

This means removing all the ink you do NOT want to transfer to the cup. If you make a “normal” design, you will remove the background, leaving only your words or shapes. Don’t forget letter centers like ‘o’ and ‘e’!

You can also choose to make a negative design (like my example “I love you more”, which means you actually remove the letters or images, leaving the rest of the ink sheet intact. This will make the words / images you must be white and the rest of the cup will be colored.

Turn your design over and take a look at the other side. Make sure everything (except the color) looks the way you want it to appear.

Use a roller or tape to remove any dust or debris from the surface of the mug, then apply the design. Make sure it’s positioned exactly where you want it, then stick it down with the adhesive backing. You can also use heat-resistant tape to hold smaller models in place.

All About The (brand New!) Cricut Mug Press

First warm up the car. The machine automatically adjusts to fit whatever size cup (12oz or 15oz) you are using. It automatically sets the correct temperature and duration, so all you have to do is wait for all five lights on top to come on and a beep to signal that the cup is finished. The process takes about six minutes.

Place it on a heat-resistant surface and resist the urge to touch it, because everything but the handle will be incredibly hot! Once it cools, gently peel off the adhesive and you’ll be left with permanent ink infused into the cup.

Once the mug has cooled, it is ready to wash and use. Not only is it microwave and dishwasher safe, it is completely food safe and non-toxic. Unlike mugs made with markers, it is absolutely safe to put your mouth on the area where the colored design is.

What do you think What is your favorite mug? What kinds of different words and patterns would you use for the people in your life? These make fantastic gifts and are truly unique! If you make your own, I’d love to see what you create! Be sure to share your latest project photos in the Amy Latta & Friends Facebook group so we can all inspire each other. Mug Press is the perfect option to easily make custom, professional-quality mugs for any occasion.

Create A Hidden Mug Design

This new product works with Infusible ink transfer sheets and pens and markers, so you can make the perfect gift for family, friends, teachers, neighbors, coworkers, grandparents, mug collectors, coffee lovers, and more.

The patent-pending heating plate design applies the optimal amount of heat and pressure with simple, one-touch settings. One button starts the transfer, LEDs track the progress of the press, and a beep lets you know when you’re done.

Unlike the iron-on or HTV process, where the artwork is attached to a base material using adhesive, an infusible ink transfer becomes one with the cup itself. The results are bright, beautiful, perfectly smooth transfers that won’t flake, peel, crease or crack. And, dishwasher friendly.

Mug Press is carefully designed to be beautiful and safe. An insulated case protects your work surface. You’ll also love the auto shut-off feature for peace of mind.

Insert the cup, lower the lever and let the press do the rest! The advanced heat plate implements the perfect time and temperature setting, so you don’t have to think about it.

When all the LEDs in the progress bar light up and you hear a beep, the cup is ready! Lift the lever to release the heat plate and carefully remove the cup from the handle. Allow the mug to cool completely on a heat-resistant surface or an EasyPress mat before handling. The first technique I want to teach you is the “pen only” method, which was used to create the heart cup below. In this case, do not cut ANY of the infusible ink transfer sheets and instead create 100% of your design with the infusible ink pens.

How To Create Your Own Mugs Using The Cricut Mug Press

When creating pen designs for your mugs, it is very important that any design you create in Cricut Design Space is set to “Draw” rather than “Cut”. If you are unsure about creating pen friendly templates, check out my full Cricut Pencil Tutorial HERE.

Start with the Mug Design Setup project file in Cricut Design Space and choose your preferred size and border:

Search the Image Library for “Drawing” designs (you can filter for pen designs only using the menu button on the left) and add them to your mug template. Make sure you don’t put any artwork outside the corner towards the tabs. On my heart design below, notice how all the hearts are at right angles vertically on each side.

ADVICE! If you want to use different colored pens for different parts of your design, you can find out how to do it HERE.

Here’s something so super fun about using infusible ink pens. Not only can your Cricut machine draw some incredible designs, but you can color them however you like! I highly recommend using fine point pens (0.4 weight) to draw and infusible ink markers (1.0) or freehand markers to color any pattern.

Think of all the possibilities here! Technically, you don’t even need a Cricut machine in this case! If you’re an artist or want your kids to create their own designs, use infusible ink pens to draw and color on plain paper (just make sure it fits the cup)!
