What works best for your students and curriculum?

As our classes grow and teachers have less planning time, it becomes increasingly difficult to plan projects for all levels and abilities. Triangular assignment allows for division, making it easy to meet the diverse needs of all the students in your class. Would three versions of this brochure (elementary, intermediate, and basic) work well? Will it help encourage and develop each student’s strengths? For example, visual learners might create a booklet that includes lots of pictures, while language learners might focus more on writing. Want to incorporate more technology into your instruction? Don’t be afraid; A trifold brochure can do that! The great part is that you can incorporate as much or as little technology as you want. Finally, students can design their entire notebook online. Free online apps like canva.com include brochure design templates that make it easy for students to create unique brochures. Students can create handouts using Google Slides. It’s a lot smaller than Canva, but it’ll get the job done.

You can include technology in the research section of the notebook project. Depending on the nature of the textbook, there may be an element of the project that students can use the Internet to complete. I did the same thing with the history trip chart my students did. They completed manuals on paper, but used the Internet to research the historic site.

We all strive to have standards-based courses and tests, making the Trinity Booklet an excellent candidate for checking all the necessary boxes. Since you are designing your own brochure project, you have the ability to ensure that it is based on standards. The easiest way to do this is to plan backwards. Plan a project with your lesson or assessment objectives in mind. Post-planning ensures that each notebook board reflects student learning. That way, you can ensure that your notebook project is a meaningful and purposeful learning tool.

Using a three-picture booklet instead of a standard test allows your students to do something new and different. Don’t get me wrong, tests are important in the teaching process, but tests are not always written tests. I love Disney movies!  My first memory of going to a movie theater was with my mom and sister to see The Little Mermaid when I was about 3 years old.  I’ve been fed up ever since.  I still go to Disney movies when my sister comes out of the theater, but now we take her 5-year-old son with us (most of the time). When I saw “Inside” this summer, I fell in love with it!  It takes place inside the brain of an 11-year-old girl named Riley.  The main characters are Riley’s emotions – joy, sadness, fear, disgust and anger.  Emotions interact and create memories, taking Riley through her days.  Riley’s core memories (important moments in her life) create aspects of her personality known as personality islands.  Riley’s 5 main islands are Goofball Island, Family Island, Friends Island, Hockey Island and Honesty Island. When Riley was young, Joey performed most of his actions, but during the film, Riley’s family moved away.

It was another wet and rainy Saturday in Victoria, and I spent the morning with our brains!  (I know, I’m crazy!)  When I was in school, I loved crossword puzzles.   What are rebus puzzles?  They are crossword puzzles that show a common phrase or expression.  I didn’t know they were called Rebus until today, but now that I know I need to use that word as much as possible!   I found a couple online, then decided to make handouts to use as a warm-up for my English classes.  As I was making them, I thought, “My, this would make a great TpT!”  I made 36 brain teaser pages, one for each week of the school year, and put them together.  They are for sale in my TpT store, One Way Teacher. If you’re as defiant as I am on a rainy Saturday, maybe you’d like to try? See if you can solve these puzzles! For answers, click here.
