Design For Paper Hands – We chat with Holly Neilson, aka. Papers explaining the ins and outs of being your own boss, working on your first children’s book, and the importance of a morning routine in your practice.

I’ll start my day with a yoga class and then drink a strong coffee, haha. It is very important for me to do something to communicate with myself before starting my creative work. I will start showing around 7:00 in the morning. I find I’m most creative in the morning, so I focus on using that time for studio work. In the afternoon I will work on emails and director jazz. I try to avoid working nights since I’m a dead person at this point.

That’s all the evil I can think of. I don’t hate any aspect of this job. Most of the time it’s great and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

I think after I finished school, I felt that I didn’t need to set criteria for my art, that I could create whatever I wanted with my true, original style and preference. As I began to delve into my own honest thoughts and experiences, I felt like my style fit the bill. I now pursue new ways to bring my style to different work environments.

I hope to work on my first children’s book. It’s a very busy time as my samples are in the process of being approved by the publisher. So anything is possible at this stage; Fingers crossed though! I would love to share or work in a studio other than my own, so I’m hoping something great will come of it. I want to start a clothing brand soon. More ideas emerge all the time, but these are the main ones for now.

It was truly a lightbulb moment. I was outside drawing one afternoon and I remember a word that came to mind after using a bunch of my parents’ silly new printable doodles. I also work with paper and my hands, so when I exhibit I always like to start with paper and my hands definitely do the rest. I think this largely represents my creative process, and it has always been simple thanks to your hands and creative thinking.

I was pretty average at drawing when I was young… I remember my older sister (who is a master at it) encouraging me to draw after I started the ‘Drawing’ series. I remember he drew the mice we bred for a competition and they were perfect. He won the game easily. I liked his work so much that I decided to learn how to draw his mouse paintings. I only remember drawing mice for a year after that competition; I couldn’t give up on this idea.
