How To Make Shirt Designs With Cricut – Learn how to make a simple t-shirt using the Cricut! This is a great project for beginners and I will show you how to do it step by step.

One of the reasons many people buy a Cricut is the ability to make t-shirts! And it’s easy to see why: The Cricut is perfect for making t-shirts because it’s easy to cut vinyl designs with glue. My Print then Cut Iron on Transfer t-shirt tutorial was a big hit, and the My Heart Mandala t-shirt also attracted a large audience! This may be a bit difficult for beginners. So I wanted to go back a little bit and give you a really easy tutorial on how to make a shirt with the Cricut!

A few months ago I did a Full Color T-Shirt Tutorial, Print Then Iron-on Transfer, which was very successful, but printing and then cutting can be a little challenging for beginners. So I want to go back to that a little bit and walk through a super simple tutorial on how to make a t-shirt with your Cricut!

How To Align And Size Iron-on Designs On T-shirts

In this project we will work with iron on vinyl, also known as heat transfer vinyl or HTV. Iron-on vinyl is a special type of vinyl that has a heat-sensitive adhesive that sticks to fabric and other surfaces when pressed using a heat source such as an iron or EasyPress. In this video I show you how to use BOTH.

The best thing about the Cricut is that you can cut designs or names from adhesive vinyl in a variety of colors, patterns, and textures to create unique and special designs. And if you do it right, your shirt can be machine washed up to 50 times before you run into trouble. In this video I show you the EXACT way to do it so you get great results!

The thing is, there are a lot of things that can go wrong when making a dress. You must remember to glass or flip the design, place the vinyl face up on the cutting mat, weed the desired part of the design, preheat the first jacket, set the correct temperature, press long enough, and remove the carrier sheet at the right time. The good news is, I’ll be right there with you as you sew the dress to make sure you’re doing it right!

It’s time to stop our ironclad design. So weeding means removing all the vinyl that we don’t want to transfer to our project when ironing or using a heat press. This means we will remove all the extra pieces.

First you need to start peeling the vinyl from the edge. Unfortunately, vinyl doesn’t want to come off that easily. So, I made a small cut in the corner with a utility knife. You don’t want to cut it all off. Simply use an iron to cut the vinyl layer from the matte side (cut side). I find that if you make this cut it will be easier to remove. So I went straight to the corner here:

And now I can get the nails under the edge of the vinyl easier thanks to that little notch. If you run into problems, you can use the refinement tool to pull it out like this. Once you start, just keep removing it from the carrier sheet. And your design will remain on the carrier sheet, and the parts that are not needed will disappear, like this.

Now if you look at your design, you’ll see that not everything has been removed, right? So we have parts inside the heart, wings and letters.

Tip: Always keep small notes out of the way, away from the work area, so they don’t get mixed up with other things.

Just be patient and, if necessary, you can use tweezers to remove small pieces without damaging the letters. This is where we polish the whole design.

How To Layer Iron-on Vinyl Shirts

First, if you use Cricut EasyPress, read the Cricut EasyPress Online Quick Start Guide, which walks you through how to prepare materials and EasyPress, how to apply, and how to care for the finished product. This will take the guesswork out of it. You can see the manual at /easypress.

If you use an iron, you must preheat it to the Cotton setting or the appropriate setting for the material.

Place your design on the shirt. In this project we want to position at the front. To find the center of the shirt, fold it in half, matching the sleeve. Using EasyPress or an iron, make small folds in the folds. Now when you unbutton a shirt, you know exactly where the center is because of the crease. Just line the center of the heart with a fold. I also decided to put the design on the top of the shirt.

If the transfer sheet is stuck to the iron, you can cover the design with parchment paper to protect the surface of the iron.

For this project, my design is larger than my EasyPress. So I have to move the EasyPress to heat the design in two parts.

According to the EasyPress Heat Guide, I should turn the shirt and press on the back.

Wait and allow the structure to cool to a warm temperature. Next, remove the protective sheet from your design.

Be sure to visit the Cricut website to find instructions on how to use your materials. For daily iron, see the settings here.

To learn how to properly care for your new clothes, wait 24 hours after applying the vinyl before washing. Before washing without dust, undress. This design should last at least 50 washes.

Question: Why does my vinyl graphic come off the shirt when I try to remove the back sheet?

Answer: This can happen for several reasons. At first, it may be too early to pull out and you will want to let the structure cool a little more and then try again. If this still does not help, heat the structure a little more. These are usually two reasons why it doesn’t work.

Question: I have heard that I need to see the texture / grain of the shirts through the iron on the vinyl; is this true?
