Dining Room Decorating Ideas On A Budget – We have now been in our stone house for 9 months and, although no rooms are finished, our dining area is as put together as it will get (at least for now).
The kitchen and dining area are attached, but the kitchen isn’t quite ready for its photo display, so we’ll take a tour of the newly renovated dining area.
Dining Room Decorating Ideas On A Budget
This is what the space looked like before we moved our stuff in. Pale yellow walls and a lamp that barely hung.

The previous owner had window blinds in every window of the house, and they were all in bad shape. Can you see that little bracket in the ceiling next to the big window? Yes, they were full at home too.
Not a big deal, but they were unsightly, in my eyes anyway, and kind of a pain to fix. (Obviously they were a big deal to me. 😉 )
The room contained large bones. There is beautiful crown molding and the walls were freshly painted before the previous owners put the house on the market. It was in decent shape but needed some updating and a new coat of paint (something other than yellow).
The first thing I did was to repair and paint the walls. Our house is 70 years old with plaster walls which means that every time you want to hang something, or remove it, you are left with a very big, ugly hole. Once the holes lined up, I proceeded to paint. I used Benjamin Moore Paper White, which is a very light gray.
Dining Room Decorating Ideas *budget- Friendly Makeover*
All the walls in the house are smooth except those near the fireplace. I’m not sure why they used these textured wallboards, but someone thought it was a good idea. I’m not a fan and, aside from my distaste, it’s hard to paint. I’m so glad they didn’t use it throughout the house.
I didn’t have much time to paint the whole room (dining room and kitchen) at once, so I did one wall at a time. We also worked on electrical outlets and light switches while removing the wall. Along with this old house came ugly switches. They were dirty and painted around the house, so when we do a room, they get changed too (and checked to make sure they’re safe).
Another solution was the old doorbell box. It really hurt. We still haven’t been able to get the old doorbell to work since we moved in, so we ended up buying a wireless one. The old box was still attached to the dining area so I removed it, made some big holes and painted the wall. It’s so nice to sit down to eat and not look over that old, ugly box.
Another change we made to the room was the hanging lamp. The one we got when we moved in was good, but not my style. It was also independent, so it was a project we tackled as soon as we got in.
How Much Does It Cost To Decorate A Room? A Guide To Setting An Interior Design Budget
I found this beauty at a small boutique on a trip to the beach. Hubs wasn’t sold on it, but I loved it right away. In my book, that usually means it’s the right choice. The reclaimed wood shelves on the far wall are also a new addition to this room. I shared all the details about how we made it, and what it used to be, in another post.
Once the walls were painted, I moved on to the old windows. I recently finished painting them black and I love them! You can see the before and after here.
Dirty, old blinds have also been replaced with a beautiful woven shade. It does not block the view or light, but adds texture and warmth to the window.
In its original place sat an old dresser-turned-storage cabinet and I hung my tobacco basket on top. I got 2 new lamps and added an old wooden pickup truck that I found at a thrift store.
Dining Table Centerpiece Ideas When You’re Not Entertaining
A recent addition to this space is a pedestal dining table. I had a solid oak table in here that I’d had for years and was getting ready to fix it up when I found this one for $50. It is an old teak table brought from Indonesia by the woman who owned it. It has some issues, but the wood is beautiful and more suitable. The chairs seem a little big compared to the table so they could be changed down the road, but that’s fine for now.
This corner of the room has remained the same since we moved in. I really liked the decorations on the buffet and had fun changing the chalkboard art. Don’t worry, I’m under no illusion that I’m a good artist. 😉
I think we covered every inch of the dining room. It feels good to finally have a chance to finish. There are still a few things I need to work on, like the chairs and fixing the table, but I love this space and I’m happy with how it turned out.
