Book Cover Design Ideas With Paper – Hello Graphics Fairy friends! I’m Diana from Dreams Factory and I’m happy to share another DIY project with you! Today I have a cute tutorial for you, showing you how to quickly make an old school craft paper book cover with a cute French floral twist! If you already know how to make this from the good old days, you can use the tutorial as a reminder, but if you don’t you’ll be surprised how easy this technique really is! You can keep the kraft paper cover plain or dress it up if you like, the possibilities to get creative with this are endless!

We will use a beautiful black and white cherry blossom image and a French ephemera image with a vintage frame to decorate the cover. All of these images are included in the printables I created for this project so you can easily make these beauties!

First let’s get to know the craft paper you need for this project! I used Clairefontaine’s kraft paper pad to create the cover, but also to print the images – this will give your finished cover a more cohesive look. If you can find this suitable type of paper, you can use it, but if not, you can use any other type of kraft paper pad or sheet, as long as it can also be used for printing. If you have regular kraft paper that is used for wrapping, you can use it to make the cover and then use another paper for printing. The colors may not be the same, but I’m sure the end result will look great!

Printables with beautiful cherry blossom images and French ephemera labels I made just for you! You can see that I have included several different images in different sizes so depending on the size of your book you can choose accordingly and to give you some more options, I have included 2 versions – a black and white version with no background Not and with a crafty looking background.

You can use it with a kraft-look background to print on regular paper to get the same kraft-paper effect.

You can use any type of book you want for this project – old or new books, notebooks, journals, planners, the sky’s the limit! If you’re using precut kraft paper sheets, like I did, remember that your book is smaller than your paper and you’ll need to make sure you have a little extra space around it. This will somewhat limit you to covering small books, if you want to cover something larger, you will have to cut the paper to size.

Ideally, you should have about 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) of extra paper on the top and bottom, and about 2-3 inches (5-7 cm) on the left/right sides, however you do it. can Also work with smaller sizes

Design For Meaning: Creating Effective And Artistic Book Cover Designs

Hold the book in one hand against the paper, then use your fingers to make horizontal creases along the top and then bottom edges.

Use the crease as a guide to fold the kraft paper up and down You can use a ruler if you want, but we’re not looking for perfection here, so your fingers will do! Make these two horizontal folds as straight as possible

Close the kraft paper cover and make sure the book is centered, then use the book as a guide to create a vertical crease along the edge of the front cover with your fingers.

Open the paper cover and use the vertical crease to fold the top cover – the left side of our paper cover as it is placed on the table.

Open the book and tuck the front cover into the folded paper pocket on the left. The book should slide in very easily.

Close the book again and place it on your table, then using the book as a guide, use your fingers to create a vertical crease on the back of our paper cover.

Open the book and fold the paper into a vertical crease, then simply tack it to the back cover of your book.

Now you can proceed to decorate the cover using the adorable printables we created for you!

As I said before, I used a printable with no background and the same cut-to-size craft paper from the pad, I just love that it can be used for printing as well.

You can choose to leave a small cut border around the flower if you prefer, or remove the excess paper entirely if you prefer.

Choose your flowers and your favorite French ephemera labels and place them in your book so you can see how they will look together.

You can use them to decorate other elements or place them for other projects, but you can try if you want to give your flowers a little 3D look. Choose the same flower image size as the flower you’ll be putting on your cover and use your scissors to cut out some individual flowers – I cut three and this time I tried to remove the extra paper around the edges to show their shape better. Use the end of the brush you hold in your hand to press into the center of each individually cut paper flower to give it some dimension.

Use some glue to stick the center of each flower onto our design, making sure the flowers are placed under the correct design.

You can choose to decorate another kraft paper cover using the same image if you want, or you can decorate your own using other images! I decided to keep things simple because I liked the black-and-white look of my cover, but of course, you can use your favorite medium to embellish the paper more if you wish. You can try using distress inks, watercolors, pastels or your favorite stamps to decorate the front cover, spine or top image, just use your choice. You can use your gel plate to decorate the paper before or after making the cover, just use the kraft paper as a blank canvas and personalize everything according to your style!

The end results are absolutely beautiful, don’t you think? Who knew kraft paper covers looked so good?!

As you can see, I also added a small cutout branch to the left of the flower image, I felt that side was a little off balance and needed a little extra care.

This old-school technique is very forgiving, you’ll find that the cover won’t be perfect, but it will still be absolutely beautiful! You need to be a little careful when handling the open books as we didn’t use any glue to secure the covers, but you’ll get used to it quickly.

This technique was initially used to prevent damage to the book cover, but I love that we were able to give it an aesthetic role beyond its initial function. You can have fun using this easy wrapping technique to create beautiful kraft paper covers for all kinds of books, notebooks, journals, planners, or anything else. You can make stacks of these beauties and use them as decorative items in your home, or you can quickly decorate your junk journal cover, the sky’s the limit!
