Decorating has always been a bit of a challenge. It is a 20′ x 20′ space with two windows on one side of the room. After placing our not-so-square furniture, we had to deal with rather awkward corners. There is one corner in particular that I considered a blind spot; one that none of our existing furniture would fit in – that’s why we created a DIY corner fireplace.

Decorating On A Budget: Halloween Fireplace Mantel Ideas

First of all, my husband is a big TV watcher and I am not. One thing I’ve learned living in an open concept home with kids is that it’s 100% impossible to watch shows like Breaking Bad and expect privacy. 🙂

Master Bedroom: Bath is immediately to the left. After installing the TV, I tried to find some meaningful furniture in this corner, but I knew I had to make it beautiful somehow.

The compromise was to install a TV in our room. But it looked quite lonely in the corner.

We bought a DIY corner fireplace “kit” for $100 at our local Habitat for Humanity ReStore’s building surplus section. If you don’t have a ReStore near you, there are some fireplace kits online that are pretty cool!

We followed the kit instructions and installed it. The corner looked like this for a long time.

The goal of this project was to create a mood in the main set. I am confident it will increase the value of our home or at least set it apart if it ever comes on the market.

…we framed the TV and it looked like it was one block. First, we put a corner shelf on the fireplace.

Mark made a frame that was cut perfectly to fit the angle of the wall and cover all the unfinished exposed wood.

Recessed shelves allowed taller items to be placed on the hearth. I found these inexpensive buffet lamps from Kirkland’s that are the perfect size.

Many people said that the cavity behind the TV should have been painted white. We left this task to the new owners of the house.

We didn’t even try to install a heater because it works perfectly for us and Buddy. Buddy is getting older now, so we want him to be as comfortable as possible. I think he had a mini stroke and is practically deaf and blind. 🙁

We don’t have lessons, but we are happy to answer questions. Total cost was about $200 and was a great upgrade to use this space. I hope that sharing it will help you “see” if you ever come across a dead corner in a room that needs a little sprucing up.
