Best Graphic Design Ideas – The Manifesto is a series on WePresent that invites activists and creatives to write down 10 rules they should follow to help spread their message. We’ve teamed up with WePresent to share Jessica Walsh’s top 10 rules for successful branding and design as part of our Manifesto series.

I believe that passion, curiosity and persistence are the most important ingredients in creativity. The idea of ”natural talent” is a myth in my opinion. No one emerges from the womb as a great artist or designer. I was terrible when I started! I became good at what I do by spending hours studying, perfecting and developing my skills. You have to experiment, try things out and produce a lot of bad work before you can do something good. Creativity isn’t always easy, it’s not all fun and games. Many times I wanted to accept the negative feelings: that I wasn’t good enough, that I would never make it in the industry, that I was too tired to get up and move on. I no longer let hard times or negative thoughts kill my passion or appetite, I use them as fuel. I discovered that all my best jobs, discoveries or personal breakthroughs came from the hardest moments of my life!

Branding doesn’t have to be trendy. Great branding is proprietary and distinctive. If you make your brand look like everyone else is doing it (in this case, the “startup brand look and feel”), it will be difficult to stand out, be memorable, or gain recognition. Some of the best brands have strong visual/copy languages that consumers can quickly identify the work and style without ever seeing the brand logo.

Many of the best ideas, innovations and new businesses start with the question, “Why?” What are the struggles in your life? Are there things you are unhappy about that could be improved? These can be things that bother you in your daily routine, things that bother you about yourself, or things that you think could be improved in the world. List all of these “why?” And ask yourself what you can do to solve each of these problems. Is there a product or app that can solve them? The best new products and brands often start this way.

For nearly a decade now, I’ve spoken and given workshops about the value of interruptions, as I believe they’re the best way to generate ideas. They are also a great way to create a unique visual style, artistic style or brand style. This is a technique often used in writing. For example Dr. Seuss wrote his books with only 30-120 words, which gave his books a quirky and unique style that people loved. Many of my favorite painters, photographers, filmmakers and artists also work within their personal boundaries. Maybe you just write with a certain unique, strange tool or unusual ink. Maybe you only take an upside-down photo once a day at the same time. Or maybe you use 3D software to create analog-style paint strokes that you then combine with other digital tools to create typography. Whatever they are, boundaries can help you create a memorable style for yourself or your brand that people can start to recognize you for. The more unique the obstacles, the more distinctive the style, which can help you gain more recognition. For example, a lot of people are doing brush lettering or photo illustration collages as long as you don’t use sound and content as a way to highlight those styles.

How I interpreted it early in my career was that if someone asked me to do something I didn’t know how to do and I wanted to do it, I would just say yes and then later. Will find out. Accomplishing any task is really not that difficult if you know how to be smart, persistent and resourceful. This is now my #1 piece of advice I give to others just starting out. Google things, read, research and create your own opportunities. Don’t wait for people to teach you things or for opportunities to fall into your lap, sometimes, you have to create your own opportunities instead of waiting for them.

Nothing new at all. Creators and innovators in all fields often take existing ideas or techniques or things we’re all used to seeing and twist them in a new way. Creativity makes interesting new connections between things that already exist. Creative coincidence happens all the time. I often have ideas that I thought of for a project only to research and find that it has already been done. It’s always scary when it happens, but it happens to everyone, so don’t let the anxiety get to you. I would say in the concept stage don’t think about it. Let your mind be free and experiment with styles or ideas. However, before you decide which ideas to run, it’s a good idea to do your homework to make sure they’re not too close.

There are many successful people who talk about how great failure is. I think failure is an important part of the creative process, but ultimately, when it comes to delivering a project, your failures should be behind you. You have to try and experiment and fail to create new ideas and styles. It’s the only way to push your work to develop somewhere new and exciting. Otherwise, you’re constantly repeating styles or ideas that you know have worked for you or someone else in the past. If you are working on a project, give yourself plenty of time to fail in the experiment phase. You have to have the space and time to take risks and do bad things to get a good place. But put a time limit on it and you know when to stop experimenting and start implementing. Otherwise, you run the risk of failure in terms of missing deadlines or delivering poorly executed work. I personally don’t think this kind of failure is something to celebrate. When a client pays you to do a job, I have a moral obligation to deliver quality work based on what I promised.

For me, making time for creative personal projects is like going to the gym. It’s hard to find the time to do it at first, but if I do it somewhat regularly as part of my weekly routine, it gives me a lot more energy for life and work overall. I don’t think it distracts from the client’s work, it feeds into it. Many of the things we learn while working on passion projects come back to personal work. In addition, many new clients find us through their personal work. The kind of work we want to do when no one pays us often leads to paying jobs in the field. We all want to get paid to do the things we love and care about, and sometimes passion projects are a good way to do that.

Over the years, I’ve learned that while I love to learn and try to do everything myself, I can’t be an expert at everything. Can I learn how to do my own accounting or photography or type design even though my strengths are in graphic design and creative direction? I can, but I’ve learned that trying to do everything myself isn’t always the smartest or best way. Sometimes it is better to realize your strengths and spend your time on them and instead hire or work with people who are subject matter experts. It may seem more expensive at first, but doing it right often pays off in the end and saves money in the long run and leads to a better outcome. Along those same lines, I also learned that sometimes it’s cheaper to hire more expensive top talent. With experience comes speed and quality, and if you’re only working with young people, you can often waste time and money redoing things when they’re not done right.

Good design, in my opinion, is both beautiful and functional. It is successful in what it is trying to achieve and/or communicate. Good design can be used to inform, inspire, entertain, sell products or tell a story. Good design can make complex topics easier to understand, simplify experiences, reduce waste or draw attention to a cause. In this blog post, I will show you my favorite websites for graphic design inspiration and help you create amazing designs and you can also share your projects on these websites.
