A low ceiling does not have to disappoint you in the design of your kitchen. Here at Wood & Wire, we prefer to exclude the unusual architectural elements and take advantage of them, which is exactly what we did in Degnan’s low-ceilinged cabin.

Low Ceiling Kitchen Design Ideas

Firstly, in a low ceiling kitchen design we recommend keeping the dark colors to the base units and leaving the space above eye level free for lighter colours, opening up the space and making it look bigger than it is. As you can see, the Degnanos used black and green laminated plywood cabinets only at the end of their kitchen.

Next are the open shelves. While in some cases open shelves give the impression of more space, in a kitchen design with a low ceiling it can be the opposite. If you’re the type who can’t resist filling a shelf with all your pretty things, then open shelving and a low ceiling probably won’t work well for you. In this situation, too many things to look at makes the scene very busy, and since the ceilings are already low, you risk feeling like the walls are closing in too. So unless you are a minimalist, we will always go for closed wardrobes and as little escape as possible, and we also recommend making them in light colors to keep things nice and airy, as we did in this example. Here we used a combination of open plywood shelves and wall cabinets to keep things tidy.

Pantry units are a great way to increase storage in a low ceiling kitchen design and when planning them in the scheme, we will raise them to the ceiling and keep them in lighter colors, as shown here. This way, you get full-length storage space if your kitchen size allows, and it helps you keep the use of wall cabinets to a minimum.

On this low ceiling kitchen design we had to consider an additional overhead beam, but with our custom solution it wasn’t a big deal as we could easily build around it without compromising the design.

Finally, in a low ceiling kitchen design we would always recommend concealed spot lighting where possible as this keeps the ceiling clear of clutter and reduces the risk of head injuries!

Recessed lighting fixtures are a fantastic solution for kitchens with low ceilings. Their design allows them to be built into the ceiling, so that they do not encroach on the space of the room.

One of the great advantages of flush mounted lights is their variety of styles and finishes. Whether your kitchen has a modern, rustic, traditional or eclectic design, a built-in lamp fits into it. They come in a variety of materials from glass to metal and designs from simple and elegant to intricate and ornate.

Despite their subtle placement, recessed lights are very effective in providing sufficient brightness. They distribute the light evenly throughout the room, ensuring that every corner of your kitchen is well lit. This makes tasks like cooking and cleaning easier and safer.

Pendant lighting can be an attractive addition to kitchens with low ceilings, but it’s important to weigh the pros and cons. Pendant lights add visual interest and can be a focal point in your kitchen.

However, they can make a room feel more cramped if not used strategically. Choose smaller lights or adjustable height options adjusted to the height of your ceiling to successfully install pendant lighting.

Creating a harmonious and functional kitchen lighting design involves skillful layering of different types of lighting. By combining ambient, task and accent lighting, a well-balanced and attractive room can be achieved.

Start by building a base layer of ambient lighting that sets the general brightness level in your kitchen. Ceiling lights, natural light from windows or wall lights can provide this basic layer of lighting to ensure a consistent and comfortable level of brightness throughout the room.

Then focus on task lighting to illuminate specific work areas, such as benches, sinks and hobs. Effective task lighting makes cooking and food preparation tasks easier and more enjoyable. Options such as under-cabinet lighting and adjustable lights are perfect for providing targeted lighting in these key areas.
