Decoration Ideas For Booklet – Hello graphic fiction friends! I’m Diana from Dreams Factory and I’m back here to share another DIY project with you! Today I have a short but absolutely adorable tutorial where I’m going to show you how to decorate the spine of these beautiful books with a beautiful image that we’re going to split into three parts! You’ll love how quick this project is, you’ll be creating some stunning decorative books in no time!

Today I’m using this beautiful black and white image of decorative flowers, but you can try the same technique with other images too!

As for books, you can use old or new, color them however you like and you’re good to go! You may have already tried my decorating book bundle where I showed how to paint and press hardcover books – I used this kit today to further decorate and I love how they all turned out. If you prefer, you can also use cloth-wrapped books or some plain paper-wrapped books (maybe stain the paper with coffee first), use whatever you like best and think matches your home decor best.

I am sharing the print I used for my books, I have included two different images so you can choose your favorite. My pictures are a nice dark brown, if you want a black and white version you can set the printer to print them in black and white. As you can see, there is some room at the top of the printable if you want to use the same tissue paper setup I use (I’ll share the details below).

Before we get started, I want to show you the tissue paper setup I use because it’s the perfect combination that works for me and my laserjet printer. I use a regular sized piece of cardboard for the base, put a little bit of tissue paper on top, leaving some space at the top, then use paper tape to hold the tissue paper in place. You can check my design in the picture below, I highlighted the edges of the tissue so you can see the size of it better.

Place the books on the spine table and place the tissue paper image on top.

Try to center your image as much as possible, then slowly pull the left and right books aside, leaving only the center on the table. Use your fingers to gently but firmly press around the edges to create a crease.

Remove the tissue paper from the book and place it on the table so you can refold it to emphasize the creases already created.

Carefully cut along the lines with scissors. Depending on the width of your books, you will have 3 strips of the same size or 3 different sizes of tissue paper.

Use Mod Podge or any other craft glue to adhere the center strip to the top of the center spine of the book. I like to work in sections when applying glue to the book and sticking a strip of tissue paper, I find that this way I can completely prevent air bubbles. I don’t like to add another layer of Mod Podge over the image at this point, preferring to let the image dry completely before doing so.

Place the left book on the table and bring your hands close to the book so that you know where to stick the left side of the picture.

After gradually applying the glue to the spine of the book, I like to gently press the tissue paper with my fingers. It’s important not to get any glue on your fingers (keep a paper towel around) so you don’t accidentally lift the wipe when you press it.

I love how easy this project is and how stunning the end results are, the close up detail is absolutely gorgeous! My books are a bit open because I usually use them to press flowers and all other small plants from our garden so the layout isn’t perfect, but I don’t mind!

I’m really amazed at how stunning they look, I love the translucence that tissue paper usually brings to any decorated item. You can see the edges of the paper here and there – if you look very closely – but the overall look of the design is absolutely beautiful, it feels like it’s embedded in the books.

I would say the best part of this technique of using tissue paper to decorate a book experiment is that you can actually see the painted surface underneath. It adds even more charm to our books, and gold acrylic paint on the edges doesn’t hurt!

You can use any kind of black and white images you like, such as bees, butterflies, birds or other decorative images, the sky is the limit! But at this point, I’d say we’ve succeeded in creating some stylish and sophisticated books that can easily fit into any home decor.

I love using figurines of angels, small jars or other small decorative items like buttons, safety hooks and bowls filled with scraps of lace to create elegant vignettes for our home. You can add some greenery to your vignettes if you want to stay on the neutral side of things, or small vases filled with seasonal flowers if you want to add some color. And let’s not forget that these beauties can be turned into the perfect gift for any vintage-loving friend, so make an extra batch or two so you can have them with you when you need them!
