Unlike chairs, a bench can seat more than one person (a few children!). Even better if the bench is built into the island, acting as a natural transition from the kitchen to the formal dining area. In this kitchen dining room by Jane Liu, the bench is placed on the other side of the island to double the use case of the room and integrate the more functional kitchen with the formal meeting space.

Open shelves are often the best storage option in a tight space, but you have to fill them wisely. Coordinating plates and servingware, like this classic blue and white set, add a decorative element to a culinary flair. The plates were the starting point for everything in this prep and dessert dining room designed by Cara Fox.
If you have to sacrifice part of your dining room for a home office, get the best of both worlds by choosing furniture that performs well for both jobs. This spacious farm table in a home designed by Leanne Ford can be used as a great space to spread out big creative projects and do a little homework. However, when mealtimes are over, it can also function as a dining room.
Two chairs and a corner banquette is a popular combination for a reason: it is a very efficient use of space and leaves plenty of room for relaxation. Together, they turn an empty corner into a stylish dining space, but they can also be a great backdrop for meetings and work. In this vibrant dining room nook designed by Ariane Beatty, a matching table and chairs create just the right amount of collaboration.
It is often thought of as a lack of design in other rooms, and placing furniture against the wall frees up space to walk in a narrow dining area that shares a living room and/or kitchen. A long rectangular or oval table like this one by Barry Benson in this open concept can also be a good buffet table for parties.

Chinese sideboards or cabinets are very beautiful, but they can dominate most of the room and use space effectively. On the other hand, floating shelves or custom shelves can be tailored to your needs (fill an entire wall with them if you want!) and offer more flexible storage than individual pieces. A loft, like this one designed by Lauren Waters, makes a great addition to a room with high ceilings.
If you live in a rental or are not ready to make any permanent changes, it is still a good idea to have a warehouse to keep your collections stored and organized. In this small dining room, designer Latim Gordon imagined a large dining table, so there was space for display cabinets on the floor.
The bookcases and banquettes are meant to be next to the wall, providing as much seating, storage and open space as possible – so when put together, they’re like a small dining room superpower. And two invitations are better than one! This clever arrangement offers space for the whole family in a tight corner – and hides storage under the seats.
Invest in a dining room table with extendable leaves so they can be folded away when not in use. It’s a simple adjustment but it makes all the difference. In this Scandinavian-style dining room designed by Victoria Sass of Prospect Refuge Studio, four chairs are placed around the table, but it can seat up to 6 and even more when fully extended.

In this space at Osclo Studio, a custom sofa serves the ambiguous shape of the room. The table and chair can be moved to the side when the space needs to be used as a formal sitting room. Even if you can’t splurge on custom seating, rethinking your dining room layout can help you make the most of a living room that needs extra space or accommodates a living space.
A built-in banquette is the hidden storage solution in this unique dining nook designed by Tamsin Johnson Interiors. Hidden drawers under the pillow can hold things like napkins, napkins, and more. The paint color and the groove on the outside of the drawers match the cabinetry in the kitchen next to it for a seamless look.
Use this little visual trick to make any small room look bigger: Mirror reflectors can create more space and bounce light around the room to make it feel more airy. For a more traditional and formal look, choose antique mirrors as Celery Kemble did here.

If there’s one thing I love about Washington DC and the row houses, it’s the unusual layout. Take my apartment for example. The building was definitely a single-family home when it was built in 1934, but today it is an unusual puzzle that includes up to four one-bedroom apartments. I’ll be honest, when we first visited the place, there was one room I was particularly excited to decorate, the dining room.
Bachelor Apartment Part 2: Chic Small Dining Room Ideas
I’m sure other city dwellers can appreciate how much they want a specific place to eat – I’m not counting! But what’s in my dining room, it’s not really a room. That’s what I like to call it.
To get from the front door to the kitchen or living room, you have to go through a narrow corridor, then through a fat corridor. Remember: the apartment is a jigsaw puzzle. As with any passable area, I knew that my partner and I should be able to move easily through the dining area. Sure, we love hosting dinner parties, but no one wants to be stuck in their seats.
So I made a plan! First step: paint the gray walls with Clare Paint’s Whipped, my favorite warm white color. The place has south-facing windows, but they are mostly hidden by our neighbours’ terraced houses. The warm, bright shade helped the light bounce around the room, adding to the sense of touch. I added a $40 pendant from IKEA (yes, tenants can swap out light fixtures), added some artwork, and set up a small bar chart.
Our dining area is long and narrow, so I decided to try a narrow rectangular table. It was… okay. But something always felt a little off. If the chairs were pulled up to the side, it was difficult to move around. Sometimes the hardest part of designing or building a space is knowing when it’s time to change course. He was definitely number one on the table.
How To Turn An Oversized Hallway Into A Dining Room
Looking at those walls while working from home with my partner and the amazingly organized space for most of the day, I got my wheels turning, and started adjusting my space around my new needs.
A bit of it. It’s very human to want to go ahead with your plans like I did for the original design of the room, but I’m so glad I did.
