The goal of this project is to design and prototype an active construction system where wood components can fit into the woodwork using tongue and groove components.

The design must be able to simplify the assembly processes of traditional residential furniture, which can often be complicated. There, a prototype will be made using a variety of 3D printed materials, including PLA plastic and metals.

Ideally, the end product should be a range of different furniture, different in colors and materials, to demonstrate the variety possible in this design process.

My goal is to make the project open source and publish all documents, files and ideas online to get feedback or simply share ideas and see what others can do.

This is my project plan that I followed more or less strictly throughout the year.

I thought about exploring this design more, but ended up not using it as a final design because I had better ideas.

Another remarkable experience. I really liked the voronoi patterns and organic shapes of the time and wanted to try implementing them into my designs.

This idea/experiment was where I started to get on track and discover my design concept. However, it came with many, many problems regarding stability and structural integrity.

So I put these ideas into action and tried to build my first design prototype. I quickly abandoned the idea of the plastic wedge under the wooden legs to try and keep it flat on the floor and opted to just cut the legs at an angle.

At the top you see the second prototype, which was key because it allowed me to realize that the project needed the strength and therefore the thickness of the domino construction.

I also designed my ideas in CAD to see if it would work, and it seemed like that should solve the stability issue as well as adding extra rails in the center of the board.

This one came out stronger than before, but still medium strength. I attributed this to weak, brittle wood and a crucial element of the 3D printed woodwork that needed to be replaced. Instead of the domino being built into the construction, it had to be separated and sit in its own hole for strength and didn’t break easily.

I run into some issues during the final production stage of my project, but with some smart reflection it always worked out in the end.

Here I am pictured oiling the wood after assembly. With a bit of epoxy, stronger Tasmanian oak and stronger domino construction, I eliminated 95% of the swing, which I’m happy with.

But before we look at some ideas for your big project, it might be worth reviewing the general requirements of this project, as defined by NESA.

Your MDP in Design and Technology is worth 60% of your H.S.C. and you can start H.S.C.
