My First Air Dry Clay Projects!

Today I am sharing an awesome collection of air dry clay projects. Air dry clay is very fun and easy to use. It is affordable to buy and suitable for both adults and children.

I’ve made a lot of simple air dry clay projects over the years (these stamped air dry clay bags are still my favorite) so you can imagine how much I love them. It is a perfect material to create beautiful home decor pieces like trinket pots or mirror holders. One of the best things about it is that it does not require cooking, firing or oven (no high heat). All you have to do is let your finished project air dry and after 48 hours you will have an amazing piece that you can decorate with acrylic paint and varnish.

Air-dried clay is a great alternative to traditional clay. It is lightweight, easy to use and can be rolled, stamped, coiled and shaped into anything you want.

If you’re looking for a simple kid’s craft, the whole family can make air dry clay together. It’s great for those who want to try clay but don’t have the time or resources to go the traditional ceramic route.

The best part is that it doesn’t need to be put in a kiln to harden, making it a fantastic material for beginners. You’ll know your soil is dry because it turns lighter in color. If you use white clay, it will change from gray to slightly off-white.

As much as I like air-dried clay, there are some downsides. The main problem is that it is not waterproof or food safe so anything made with air dry clay should only be used for decorative purposes. If you are interested I wrote a post on how to glaze or varnish with weathered clay that goes into more detail.

Another problem is that not all types of clay work the same as others. Depending on the type of clay you use, some may be brittle or brittle. I’ve put together a list of some of my tried and tested air dry clothes below.

There are many types of clay. Almost all of the projects below use either Crayola Air Dry Clay or my personal favorite, DAS Air Hardening Modeling Clay.

I personally prefer white clay but most of the projects below use terracotta for a natural clay color.

You can use stamps or items found around the house to add texture, pattern or words to your wet pieces. Grab a cookie cutter from the kitchen cupboard and make cool geometric shapes, or go organic with handmade shapes and just shape them with your hands.

Add some essential oils to complete your piece like the one below with a terracotta oil diffuser, or grab some acrylic craft paint and add your own unique design Who’s got polka dots? If you’re feeling brave and don’t mind the mess, you can try spray paint for a similar color.
