Everything you’ve heard about Indian weddings – including multi-day events, exotic destinations, long guest lists and explosions of color – is true. These celebrations are known to be larger than life, whether the venue is the bride’s backyard or a private island. Therefore, if you have been invited to attend this type of event, it is important to put a lot of thought and effort into the clothes you choose to wear.

That’s why we caught up with Indian designers Manish Malhotra and Arpita Mehta to break down everything you need to know when it comes to dressing for an Indian wedding. Remember to take notes and leave the LBD at home!

Since most Indian weddings include a main wedding, in addition to various pre-wedding events, guests should be prepared to wear multiple outfits throughout the celebration. And according to Malhotra, gone are the days when guests are asked to stick to traditional Indian looks for every event.

“Don’t hide your individuality,” she explains. “In fact, use your personality, play with silhouettes and styles along with interesting pieces. The current trend in Indian clothing is to recycle existing items from your wardrobe and mix them with something new.” That being said, it is important to follow the dress code and signature that the couple describes.

Mehta also recommends multifunctional and comfortable clothing, as there is a lot of dancing and drinking in most Indian celebrations. The designer adds, “You’re never overdressed at an Indian wedding, so don’t be afraid to go all out with ensembles, jewelry and makeup! Most guests show up in colorful ensembles, but choose a palette that suits you.”

You can easily wear a brocade skirt with an interesting top or an embroidered jacket with slim trousers. However, Malhotra recommends a traditional Indian weave or silk outfit for the most important wedding day as a nod to the culture.

While it is acceptable to wear a formal dress to the engagement party, cocktail night or reception, stick to traditional or fusion Indian looks for the rest of the events. For example, a Mehendi (henna party) calls for more playful and colorful pieces, while a sangeet (a dance-centric event) allows for formal Indian wear for the occasion (jewel tones and metallics are never missing). Indians also tend to use red or pink for the main wedding ceremony, so avoid these shades to avoid matching the bride.

Aside from these “rules”, be sure to have fun with your fashion. Go ahead and make your lace bra double as a sari blouse. Do you have a taffeta maxi skirt? Pair it with a white shirt and open diamond jewelry for a trendy Indian look that everyone will love.

Below, we highlight the best styles for men and women to consider when putting together a wardrobe for an Indian wedding.

Top 25 Wedding Guest Wear Looks

For Mehendi, choose a puffy printed cape with tulip pants, puffy palazzos or a draped skirt. (Just be careful not to get henna stains on your outfit.) Women can also switch to a lehenga worn with an embellished top for the sangeet, which can be sequined or embroidered, off-the-shoulder or ruffled. A classic Indian sari with frill details will also do the trick, but be sure to buy one pre-stitched so you’re not looking for hours of pleating on the day of the event. Since the sangeet is all about dancing, make sure your outfit is easy to move in.

For the main wedding ceremony, choose a traditional Indian look like a lehenga or an Indian handloom sari. When it comes to what color to wear, stick to dusty pastels for daytime weddings and deeper tones for the evening, and be sure to avoid black and white on the big day. Also pack some kaftans and kurtis that you can wear to after parties, teas or occasional events.

Mehendi is your chance to have fun with prints and colors, but the preferred attire for this event is usually a kurta and slim pants (known as churidars). The sangeet calls for a black or navy blue bandhgala jacket with formal pants (or pants if you’re feeling more experimental) with the pocket square adding a pop of color. A smart evening jacket or three-piece suit is another option, although we recommend the former. Finally, choose a pastel kurta for your wedding day and add a waistcoat to dress it up even more.
