Today we’re excited to share tips for creating a comfortable transitional living room. We get asked all the time about modern transitional style. It is attractive, timeless and full of interest. Designing a living room can seem like a daunting task, but we have some simple design rules that make it a lot easier than it looks… your cozy space will look professional in no time!
As you begin to design your living room, consider some of our best tips, such as mixing modern and vintage pieces in your space and using objects with character and texture (eg wooden benches and found objects). We also prefer to stick to neutral color tones while adding pops of neutral color with throw pillows and throws to keep the room warm and full of texture and dimension.
Below, we’ve linked some of our favorite decor items that we love to have on hand when decorating a cozy transitional space. Here are some of our favorite items to achieve the classic modern look: books, vases and mugs, artwork, baskets, clean-lined furniture, a neutral rug, coffee tables and side tables, and decorative elements in wood tones. When selecting these items, it’s important to take measurements of your space to make sure you select items that fit well in your room. Considering measurements will also help you decide which items to scale. Consider what elements already exist in your space and whether they lend themselves to the style you’re creating. If so, keep them and install them. If not, consider selling and replacing these items so that the space is consistent with your new transition theme once you’re done designing it.

16 Living Room Décor Ideas To Create An Inviting, Functional Space
Keep your room bright and warm with natural textures and subtle contrasting tones. Use characterful elements throughout your space, such as wooden benches.
Start your design with a simple neutral rug. Decorate in neutral tones with pops of soft colors (eg browns, muted greens, golds, etc.).
Choose furniture in neutral colors and clean lines. We like to mix light and dark tones. Consider a pop of color or introduce a new element such as wood or leather in decorative furniture such as accent chairs. Accent furniture is a great place to decorate pieces with character and interest.
Pair solid sofas with patterned pillows in neutral tones for added comfort and interest. Layer blankets to add dimension and texture. Don’t be afraid to take a risk with your pillows – this is another great place to create consistent interest and add warmth.
Home Decor Ideas For Your Living Room
Mix your main textiles in the space. If you opt for a white sofa, consider cohesive yet contrasting accent chairs such as velvet, leather or even a patterned textile.
Mix vintage touches and layers of modern decor throughout your space. Be sure to mix the old with the new. Adding modern touches in unexpected ways is one of our favorite things at Porche & Co. For example, a modern ceiling light, a floor lamp, a decorative piece for books, etc. There are some great vintage items found on ETSY. You can also have fun buying them at your local flea markets and thrift stores!

Who said dark rooms can’t be cozy? The deep blue walls combined with a blue sofa in this Norwegian house give the living room a warm and cozy atmosphere.
Whitewashed walls are an easy way to make a big design statement. Take, for example, the bright living room of this Brooklyn apartment.
When in doubt about the design direction to take in your living room, remember that black and white is always right. Besides offering a clean palette, a white-walled room (like the living room in this Swiss apartment) dotted with black (and dark gray) pieces creates a graphic scene that still manages to be minimalistic.
A living room painted black certainly does not need to be dark. Take, for example, this deep gray living room in Toronto, which uses light-toned textiles and lots of natural light to warm up this otherwise dark and dreary space.
Neutral Living Room Ideas From Camille Styles’ Home
For some designers, what might be too much color, for others, it’s just the right amount in their living room. Case in point: Christian Siriano’s eclectic home in Connecticut, where vividly painted blue walls, orange accessories, and multi-colored textiles blend seamlessly to create a surprisingly refined scene.
Looking for a way to brighten up a neutral living room without distracting from the color palette? Printed textiles and accessories in earthy tones, especially cushions and rugs (as seen in this stunning Spanish home) are a smart way to liven up a space without distracting.
Forget the country decorating your home; When done right, rustic design elements, like the wooden table in this Scandinavian-influenced British living room, can be surprisingly sophisticated.
Sometimes all you need to update your living room is a beautiful sofa in an attractive color. Take a look at the buttery yellow beauty of this San Francisco studio and you’ll see exactly what we mean.

Looking for a modern way to fit more furniture into your small living room without taking up space? Hanging swings, like the one at Tiffany Napper’s New Orleans home, are incredibly space-saving and a lot of fun, too.
