This blog will explain how you can take advantage of Microsoft’s recently announced “Innovation Challenge”, which is a model powered by PowerApp – the technology that will drive the future of Microsoft Project and portfolio management.
Here’s a quick introduction to PowerApp and what it does right away. Note that the advantage of using PowerApps is the ability to edit and configure without basic developer skills. It’s not as easy as 1, 2, 3, but watching a few YouTube video tutorials will get you very far.
Innovation Challenge Dashboard This is the PowerApp Innovation Challenge landing page. From here you get a quick overview of active challenges and submitted ideas. It also gives you an overview of the best ideas based on user ratings. You can easily customize your website or create new dashboards in just a few minutes. If needed, data can also be accessed through Power BI by connecting Common Data Service as a source.

Challenge Management Each new challenge comes with a set of predefined mandatory custom fields. Remember that you can control how long new ideas are accepted as a way to show them to the world, when you expect to analyze, review and select ideas for further development. All these fields and processes can of course be edited through PowerApps Studio.

Idea Management When you create or update ideas, users will work with a predefined set of custom fields and a business process with access views to make sure you’re ready for the next stage. Please note below that we have not completed the proposal but are still ready to submit to the evaluation stage. The following phases are locked because they are directly related to the actual execution of the project. Here you can use Microsoft Flow to ensure that the project is managed and automatically updated in Microsoft Project Online.
Team Project Overview If you don’t connect the Innovation Challenge solution to another project portfolio tool like Microsoft Project Online, then you have the ability to perform basic project management directly from PowerApp itself.

Project Management Out-of-the-box project management is very simple and does not focus on managing tasks, resources, milestones and many other areas of PPM as one would expect using Microsoft Project Online or Dynamics Project Service. Again, you can easily set up connectivity to these systems using Flow.

Editing a PowerApp If needed, you can quickly redesign a PowerApp without being a developer. From PowerApps Studio, you can open an app, create new fields, views, forms, charts, and more.
Business Process Management Each business process can be edited and customized specifically for your organization. This is also done by PowerApps Studio.
Free Mobile App Templates For Your Next Design
So now you’ve seen a quick preview of a model-driven PowerApp sample called the “Innovation Challenge.” I’m sure this can serve as a great step towards better managing your innovation processes.
Step 1: Go to the PowerApps admin area (admin.powerapps.com/) and create a new environment. Choose the “trial” type because it automatically comes with sample Microsoft applications.
Step 2: Create a “CDS” database (just follow the tutorial) and decide on the default currency and language. Don’t forget to include sample apps and data!
Step 4: You can check the database provisioning status from the environment. This can take up to 15 minutes, so don’t be alarmed if nothing happens for a while!

Step 5: Once the database is created, you should be able to find the Innovation Challenge app in the Apps section of your newly created PowerApps environment. Clicking on it simply launches an application that contains sample data out of the box.
