Hair Design Ideas Drawing – YO! In this tutorial, I’ll explore the different ways I draw black hairstyles for my male and female characters. From short hairstyles, braids, afro hairstyles and even natural hairstyles. No matter what style you draw, I’ll show you how to make them all look amazing.

These hairstyles are very wavy. The hair texture comes from people of African descent and is personally my favorite type of hair to draw. Mainly because it’s my hair type; and the styles I draw are styles I could wear in real life.

First I draw the heads of the male and female characters. I’m not worried about facial features at this point. I just need a place for my hair.

That gives me two more models to fall back on. I use the transform tool to move them to the right of the canvas. (CTRL+T)

Now I draw the character’s hairline. For the male character, I draw a more square and angular hairline. For a female, I consider her rounded and soft.

After that, it’s time to draw the hair. The first hairstyle I want to draw is a short fade. This hairstyle does not have much volume and is very short; so first outline the basic shape of the hair on top of the head.

I imagine the character just got a new haircut. So instead of drawing the hair in more chaotic, natural and curly shapes, I draw a simpler, more rounded shape on top of the head. Take a look straight from the barber shop.

Now, as the style suggests, I swept the hair with hatches. The further we move away from the top of the head, the less densely I draw the lines. This gives the hair a faded look.

After that I finish by applying the final character and details. What’s cool about this hairstyle is that you can also add patterns to the faded part of the hair to add more personality to the character.

Next, I will draw a more natural hairstyle where the character’s hair has not been altered by brushing or plucking. This hairstyle does not rely on special styling instructions and is very curly. The character lets her hair grow naturally to reach her full potential.

First, I determine the volume of the hair by drawing a basic outline around the head. I wish this character’s hair was long.

I finish by inking the character and adding the finishing touches. A natural hairstyle can easily be transformed into an afro style or a fade style.

Braids are a more complicated hairstyle to draw. With so many variations and styles, it can be hard to choose which one to draw. I will draw box braids.

Then I draw the braids, using this pattern. Making sure the braid is smaller towards the end. I repeat this for the other braids

After that it was over. I start to draw the character and add other details. Make sure the hair inside the frame leads back to the beginning of the braid.

The last hairstyle I will draw is the bun style. Instead of a ponytail where the hair falls off the head, the bun looks like it will float on top of the head.

Since the hair is tight and tied, I draw a basic outline that barely comes off the top of the head. I also adjust the hairline so it looks like the hair is pulled back.

Now I draw two circles in each part of the hair. I want this character to have shorter hair, so I drew the smaller bun.

This hairstyle is now complete. The more hair the character has, the bigger the buns can be. Now I’m just inking the character and adding the finishing touches.
