Why did I say it was budget friendly? Because the supplies you’ll need are very minimal, and they’re cheap.

I can assure you, yes! Oh, it’s great fun for adults and children. Small planters can be a perfect summer craft for your kids, and the larger one can be a great blank canvas for your imagination.

What color did I use for clay pots? I upgraded my outdoor carved planters with Rustoleum Vibrant Blue Spray Spray. This spray paint worked well for me on both plastic and clay surfaces.

My recommended paint to use on terracotta pots is Waverly chalk paint. They look so natural and farmhouse, and you can buy them at any Walmart or Hobby Lobby.

Normally, I don’t care about exterior color for terracotta pots. The thing is, I use whatever paint I have at home from other projects and make sure to seal it with a water sealer.

I seal the inside of the pot, let it dry, then paint the outside, let it dry. Then finish the project with the sealer over the dry paint. This method has worked well for me for years.

No matter what color you want to use for painting pots, these paints and markers are available in all colors of the rainbow.

Yes. But when buying markers for your crafts, choose ones that are waterproof and/or oil-based. They tend to be the best markers for terracotta pots because they dry very quickly, and are permanent.

They work well for all crafts and surfaces, such as ceramics, wood, glass and plastic. You can even use them for rock painting projects.

My experience: I loved loved the POSCA white paint marker for coloring these clay pots. They worked well, gave me control over my design and dried in seconds.

When I was looking for the right white marker, I found this video on YouTube. It helped me choose the right brand and thickness for my craft projects.

Since my miniature terracotta pots are egg shaped and Easter is around the corner, I wanted to have a cute Easter egg design on my planters.

To achieve this, I chose a marker or sharpie instead of paint and a brush. I felt that I could control my drawing much better with a marker instead of a brush.

I love the natural color of the clay pot. It is very similar to an organic eggshell. So I decided I wouldn’t paint them different colors. Plus, I can use them after Easter for everyday home decor.

But! If you are doing this with your kids, it will be fun to paint the clay pots different colors before you draw the final design on them.

Okay, let’s move on to the step-by-step tutorial! You can read the written instructions or scroll down for the full video. I know some people (myself included) like to see both versions. DIY videos are addictive. 🙂

With a wet rag (a little harmless alcohol), you can remove all the oil residue and dirt from the surface.

I used a pencil to draw my first clay pot design. Make sure you don’t push the pencil on the pot too hard as you will only be using them as guidelines.

Pencil tends to rub easily off clay surfaces if touched with fingers. Try not to do that. Watch the video next step on how I handled my clay pots while designing.

The POSCA color marker works a little differently than its sharper brother. You have to shake it first to mix the color.

Then press the tip into the pot of clay and let the first color fall off the tip of the marker.

Start drawing according to your drawn design. Repeat the shaking and squeezing of the tip if you need more color.

Another tip: sometimes you see empty spots and try to cross it again. It won’t work! It’s like painting a wall. You have to wait until the paint dries. Give it a few seconds until it is completely dry and then go over the area again.

We…when Sasha was little I didn’t get as much time as I would have liked to treat myself to a nice project. For me, creating and creating is not only a pleasant past time, it is absolutely necessary to take care of me both physically and mentally. As an introvert I need this time to recharge my batteries. The focus the activity requires calms my nervous system, keeps my mind from going wild and allows me to be present in the moment.

So when I felt like I needed a focused 30 minutes during a busy day looking after a small child, I took us to the ‘Pottery Painting Cafe’ as it’s called in the UK or Ceramic Painting here in the US (“Color Me Mine” is a well-known chain). At the Pottery Painting Cafe You can choose from a variety of different simple ceramic objects, such as plates, cups or figurines, which are then decorated with the provided glazes and utensils.

Sasha loved clay painting, like many kids, so it was a win-win situation for both of us. It’s amazing to see how little ones are more invested when coloring with them. But hey, everyone is different and you probably won’t be able to finish completely. You can always take some frosting with you and finish at home before you return it to its dismissal.

It must be said that this is not the cheapest activity on the planet, especially with several children. We didn’t get to do it as often as we would have liked, actually 8 times exactly, because I painted a bowl to add to my collection every time we visited. Even with just one visit a year, I ended up amassing a beautiful collection of breakfast bowls, with beautiful memories attached.

Here are some tips, tricks and ideas on how to paint yourself a beautiful set of bowls.

Everything you need is usually provided, but be aware that the brushes are more often in poor condition and you may not find the size you want either. I usually painted with what was offered, just not being organized enough to plan and bring my own brushes. However, I love the random results that an imperfect brush will produce. But bring your own set, especially if you plan to do detail work.

If you want to build a small collection, be sure to choose an object that you can find in any ceramic painting studio such as plates, bowls or mugs. I’ve visited many different studios in the UK, Canada and the US, so my glaze sizes and shades are slightly different. I love these little differences. The collection as a whole still works because of the consistent way I’ve painted them. If you’re into a rustic yet sophisticated aesthetic like me, this is the way to go.

In my case I kept one color and the same size/shape. That way I was free to explore different patterns.

If you prefer to use different colors, you may want to keep the same pattern on each bowl for consistency. Stick to one color and pattern if you plan to use different objects (ie plate, mug and bowl)

To get a rich deep color you will need to apply at least two thick layers of glaze. This is especially important in
