Layout Zine Ideas – The internet is full of instructions for making DIY zines. Here are some simple techniques that can be useful in the early stages of your experiment. These templates and examples refer directly to the Black Light project, but you can use them with any image set. I have provided a zip file of the Quicksand font that you will need to install to see the original template design as it is meant to be seen first.
Download and open the Photoshop zine template file. Make sure you can see Layers (use the Window menu to select it if you can’t). The introductory text is in a separate layer. You can turn it on and off by clicking on the eye icon. Now open the image in Photoshop. Select all (Cmd + A), copy (Cmd + C) and paste (Cmd +V) it into your template file. Move it to the page where you want it to appear and resize it (Cmd + T). Remember to hold the Shift key while dragging the corners of the image to keep its original size. The blue guide will help the image fall into place (along the fold line at the end). To rotate your image (for the top page), hover over the corner until you see the rotation symbol appear and drag or go to Edit > Transform > Rotate 180 degrees.

Once you’ve finished laying out your zine and adding a title, hide the introductory text layer by clicking the eye icon. Save as, rename and save the Photoshop file (this will preserve the document layer). Then save as Jpeg. This will make typing easier. Print your Jpeg file (use the example) and scale it to fit > fill all the paper. Cut out the white border, cut and fold according to the instructions above and hello! You must have an eight-page zine.

NB. The template is set up for A3, but you can print a smaller version on A4.
This example produces a zine with twice the number of pages, but in a different format. When folded, you have a sixteen page zine. Once exposed, you can create a single poster. The above template is for both sides of the zine/poster. The instructions are similar to those used above for zine/poster textures in Photoshop. Once you have saved and exported your Jpeg file, open the front and back sides in Preview and choose to print on both sides. Alternatively, you can print separate pages and copy them 1 to 2 sides. Cut off the white border, cut and fold using the instructions above and you should have a sixteen page zine and a one page poster.
Traditionally used as a map folding technique, Turkey Map Fold can also be used for zines. The example below is made with a square piece of paper. I’ve also included a Photoshop template below and some beautiful illustrations by artist Katherine Venturelli. You can experiment by adding a hard cover, double-sided printing and sticking as many cards together. Using thicker paper will result in a more sculptural shape.
