Spring Retail Window Display Ideas – If you follow our posts, you may remember ( here ) that one of our favorite creative endeavors is designing the window displays for our friend Susan’s store, Zoe Boutique, in Old Town Alexandria, VA. Zoe Boutique is approaching its one year anniversary and Susan has amazing things planned, including a surprise gift with purchase, storewide discounts and gift card raffles during the two day celebration. It also promises delicious treats from Alexandria Cake Pop Company.
So, to celebrate this great event, as well as the arrival of Spring, we wanted to do something lively and cheerful. Wednesday morning we finished installing our window. We are very happy with the way it turned out and we hope you like it too.
Spring Retail Window Display Ideas
We made three flowers of different sizes. For the larger ones, we used 5 standard sized sheets of tissue paper, cut in half lengthwise and then stacked on top of each other (10″ x 26″ x 10 layers). The medium flowers used 4 sheets of tissue paper, cut in half crosswise and then stacked on top of each other (13″ x 20″ x 8 layers). The smaller flowers used 1 sheet of tissue paper, cut crosswise into 4 pieces and stacked (7.5″ x 20″ x 4 layers).

As we will hang our flowers, we tie a long piece of monofilament line down the middle, leaving a long tail. To help keep the line in place, we cut two small notches on either side of the center of the braided paper to create a track for the monofilament line to sit on.
To form the flower, start separating the pieces of tissue paper. Carefully pull half of the leaves up and the other half down. It was easier to draw one or two in one direction and then draw the same number in the other direction and then reverse again. Be careful to pull gently, so the tissue paper doesn’t tear.
Here is a picture of a finished flower. Purple and white shows the effect of two alternating colors of tissue paper.
We wanted stems that had a 3-D quality to them, so we decided to use a Silhouette Cameo to cut spirals out of a piece of cardstock. You can hand cut a spiral out of cardboard or cardboard to get the same effect. But we try to find unique ways to use our Cameo, so we let it do the work for us. We had four spirals on each page and cut each spiral in half to create two stems.

These photos show the four spirals cut from the cardstock, and how they were removed from the Cameo cutting mat.
Next, place the spiral stem at one end of the flower (opposite the monofilament line). At first we used Elmer’s glue, but then realized that double sided tape was easier and just as effective. This next photo shows the stem being attached with glue and a clothespin holding it in place until it dries. See why double sided tape is easier!

With the fall/back to school season coming up, I wanted to do something I’ve never done before. Whenever I finish a window, I feel like I’ll never have any other ideas and here we are: a paper dress extravaganza. I actually got the idea for an episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race where the queens had to make outfits out of one of Ru’s books. I thought yes, I have to, but a fashion piece is really out of my “architectural” comfort zone. But if you’re not challenging yourself, you’re not growing, right?
So, I got these pictures as inspiration. I fell in love with pleated paper – I said to myself, “I can do that!”
To make the paper gown I bought some fabric costume pieces to glue the paper on as well. Gotta love hot glue guns and spray mounts – they’re magical. And of course I had to make a couple of bombs.
But then I had a huge problem. I had constructed the dress off-site in one piece – how was I going to take it to the bookstore without damaging the design – walking around town, of course. I am “putting on a show” after all. So let’s go.

For my latest showcase I wanted to give the client (and clients) something colorful and fun after a year of craziness and stress. Keeping costs down was also a priority.
I found some hot air balloon launch photos, aerial photo murals, and bunches of tissue paper balls that I thought were beautiful and used them as inspiration. The owner had paper lanterns so the only props we had to buy were the sky murals.
Spring Window Display
The client mentioned doing a blank window (a cool and calm feel for this Covid Christmas) so I ran with that motive. But as usual, I wanted to use unconventional materials and play with light. I used fluorescent light fixture diffusers to distort the pendant lights… Like a frosted window. I also used white corrugated decking material for a “ski slope” background for the dress forms.
Now, add some snowflakes, wrapped white boxes, Christmas lights and white ribbons and you have a winter scene. I also wrapped the trunks from last year’s exhibit in white paper… It creates such a cool effect and much faster than painting them all.

The Bunny Window
My design was to create a retro classroom feel… As many students would learn online and miss the IRL experience. The customer wanted to save money on this screen, so I found some cheap alternatives for this window upgrade.
Inspired by artist Cy Twombly and chalk scribbles, I created these simple vertical chalkboard banners from 1/4″ lauan wood and chalkboard paint with fun chalk scribbles. Since face masks are now a top seller, I printed oversized photos of the owner and staff and hung them on old cork boards in the store’s basement, an added bonus to the classroom feel.Then I used photo murals on the back and side walls for that big-impact fall color backdrop.
Initially, I wanted vintage school desks and chairs as props, but they were too expensive, so I used some furniture I had lying around. And voila… Instant window display on a dime.

Half Moon Books’ new window installation is lit up… This installation is a trio of chandeliers made of books. It was a challenge, as with books, because of the weight, but I think it turned out great.

When Jessica, the owner of Half Moon Books and I first got together to discuss this window design, we wanted something fun and light but festive, as this would be the post-Covid 19 summer “re-opening” window. , I can’t remember how we landed on a giant word soup puzzle, but when Jessica and I think about it, it’s like lightning in a bottle.
