Every Diwali, I try to create happiness in the children with all the decorations, candles and crackers. Now they look forward to it every year. Even if you don’t have time to implement all the ideas presented here, do what you can. Something is better than nothing. I am sharing some ideas from my home Diwali decorations which you can use as whole or as part as you like.
Diwali is the festival of lights. Outdoor decorative lights are my husband’s responsibility, and he really appreciates them and attracts everyone’s attention. The pictures don’t do it justice, but the lighting effect is amazing.
He used professional installers of nearly $500 ceiling and wall lights. He can do the rest of the lighting himself, because it can be approached safely using the ladder of the house. He used LED string lights for the driveways and circles around the lamp post. He decided to go with pure light bulbs for tree trunks, house poles and large plantings. An LED string light was used to create a pyramid around the light pole.
Children love to help with Diwali decorations, making it a family event. The toddler is busy manipulating the cones for the string light, while the high schooler lets his imagination run wild with Dad’s tools on the stairs.

Remember to use proper GFCI protective circuits and follow electrical hazard precautions when installing lights.
In Indian culture, the main door is special. Many Indian traditions focus on decorating and performing various ceremonies at the entrance of the house or the pooja room. The same goes for Diwali decorations.
On my last trip to India. These are common things I find from India whenever I travel. Diya refers to the clay lamp used in the Indian countryside. Nowadays, you can buy diamond jewelry at Indian stores in almost every major US city. It’s also available on Amazon if you don’t have time to visit a local store.
After much research, I decided to use artificial flowers that I found on Amazon. I loved the overall quality, shape and texture of the flowers. I used fresh flowers from my garden and local shop. Candles were purchased from Pier1 Imports.

You can make rangoli with colors and flowers. Powder colors seem to be out of the question since I have a toddler. So I went with a simple design that can be done quickly in 10 to 15 minutes with a mix of natural flowers and florals.
Have you seen the url before the rangoli? Urlly, a copper vase that holds candles and flowers will add a different look to the decorations of events or parties. Add life to your static decor by adding inspiration to floating candles and flowers.
Next is the entryway, which is the first impression visitors make when they arrive at your home. The first impression comes with the anticipation of seeing what else is out there. Show off your home’s style while creating the desire to immerse yourself in the holiday spirit. The elaborate decoration shown here is the Ganesh Idol centered on an ornate metal table runner, surrounded by brass ornaments and ornate tea lamp holders.
I used my bangles as inexpensive tea light holders, a great way to add an Indian touch to your jewelry. I have a large collection of bracelets, so I ordered some here to decorate the tea lights.
Diwali Lights Decor: Irresistible Lighting Ideas To Try In 2022 (buy It)
My mother-in-law gave us the Ganesh idol. Here, I have used copper bowls as urlis. You don’t need to buy or use a copper bowl to add urlis as a decoration. You can use a deep-bottomed bowl to create that effect.
In the above picture I have used Kundan Rangolis for floor decorations. Alternatively, you can use the rangoli design shown below. In my case, with a running toddler, it only took a few hours.
In the house, you can add small decorations in different places to change the look and feel of your home to make it look better. For example, I decorate my living room coffee table with candles and flowers.
As you can see I am a big fan of Pier1 Imports. Most of the items in this decoration are from the shop. Whether you’re looking at a table runner, trays or lamps, all items are from Pier1 Imports, which I’ve collected over time. I move around the house creating new decorations using different combinations.

I have a nice collection of washers and trays. They are my weakness. So, whenever I see something with a good design, I buy it for future use. Trays provide a special place and draw attention and I can focus on a specific part. Fans add a different texture to the space and help contrast the color and enhance other decorative elements. I also used kundan rangolis to fill in between the spaces to give a nice tribal touch.
Another example is the decoration of the fireplace, which is usually the place of the living room in the American house. You can create a beautiful ethnic decoration by placing some antiques on the stove and in the area right in front of the stove.
Here, I have used a combination of three distinct elements to create different objects with the sole aim of depicting the various ethnic groups of India. I used two decorated elephant heads from Neetipatam and brass instruments. I fell in love with the beautiful elephant heads of Neetipatam when I visited Kerala and couldn’t resist adding them to my collection. I love how they fit right into the places I use them.
Diyas, kunda rangolis, carefully selected fresh flowers are a place mat, a place of creativity that one can glean from the picture. Pearls and Branches Shimmer Plasmat and Glitz Beaded Silver Botamat are available at Pier1 Imports.
Diwali Decoration Ideas You Cannot Miss Out On
Last but not the least, the most important place to decorate your house during Diwali is the pooja room and temple. Laxmi pooja is an important part of all Diwali celebrations which is held in the pooja room of the temple. My family moves every few years because of my husband’s work. So, although I would love to have a separate pooja room, I have to share it with the office now.
So, I use a hand-made wooden house with a background based on Rajasthani work. This background uses a tulle fabric embellished with pearl feathers, pearl beads and strings of pearls. The ends of the tulle fabric are tied using brass elephant dias. This setup enhances the pooja corner.
The door of the puja room I share with my home office is also decorated with bangles and flowers. Try adding small details like sathya stickers or multi-laxmi footprint stickers. The swastika is associated with Ganesha, and the Maha-Lakshmi footprints are associated with the goddess of wealth and prosperity. These small details will make your decoration more effective.
