When we moved into this space, it wasn’t very suitable. It was just a small square box with no character. The pluses were the large window that lets in a lot of light and the wooden floors.

The cons were the old baseboard heaters and the chandelier we walked into every time we walked through the room.

This 10×10 room is right off our little entryway at the front of the house. We’re pretty sure the previous and only owners used it as a dining area. We don’t need another dining area so this will serve as a lounge/sitting area for now.

The first project I tackled in this room was to get rid of the chandelier and the two baseboard heaters. We don’t need the heaters and they are just ugly so I removed them and fixed all the holes and damaged walls.

I also removed the old thermostat and filled that hole and all the other holes and seams.

Next was sealing all the trim and windows (old house issues) and then the trim priming started.

At this point in the project I was so ready to paint the walls. First though, I applied a few coats of bright white paint to the ceiling. What a difference it made!

The finish also got a few coats of the same paint I’ve used in the rest of the house, Behr Polar Bear mixed with BM Advance.

Finally, it was time to paint the walls. I have used this house to experiment with different glosses, namely soft whites in a matte gloss. The walls in this house have a lot of imperfections, so I was hoping the matte finish would minimize them.

The paint color I chose for this room was BM White Dove matte. I’ve used White Dove for trim before and always liked it, so I used it again.

I couldn’t believe how much this soft white brightened up the room. It was painted a medium grey, which was… okay. However, the soft white really made a huge difference.

I’ve tried to add a bit of character to every room I’m renovating in this simple 1965 ranch, and I’m doing it on a budget. The entrance got a new door and funny wallpaper. There is a pearl plate in the morning nook.

This room was supposed to form, to be more precise, the formation of picture frames. It was my first time making this type of project, but it was really easy to make. Figuring out the math for the spaces between the boxes turned out to be the hardest part of the whole project.

10 Biggest Mistakes You Make Decorating A Small Living Room

Originally I planned to do the whole room so it was 2 walls. In the end I just went with 1 wall, the sofa wall. I think it was the right call because it’s the first thing you see when you walk into a room. I love what it did for this room.

In my original living room plan, I wanted some sort of metal door for the large doorway between the kitchen and living room. After some research and price comparisons, I decided to find a more budget-friendly option. I settled on a steel and glass sliding door.

I wanted something a little more modern than the typical barn door. When I saw the glass and steel doors, I knew they would work well with the feel I was looking for in this space.

I love that they add character to the room but still let a lot of light into our kitchen.

As I said, this is a small room with only one long wall, so that was the only place to put the couch. Since it’s the only wall I can hang any art on, I decided to create a gallery wall with vintage art.

Remember I try to make it budget friendly whenever possible and this is the perfect place. I’ve been collecting flea market and estate sale art for years, so I pulled a few favorites. I also found some public domain prints online that I printed and framed in vintage frames.

I love shopping my house and decorating a room with things I already have. Not only is it budget friendly, but it’s also a great way to use the things you love in different ways.

The section has moved with us from Florida to Illinois and now to two homes in North Carolina. It’s a little big for this room, but it’s a piece we love and I couldn’t justify buying a new one if we don’t use the room every day.

A chair in one corner of a room and a wardrobe in another are long-loved pieces that have been used in several of our homes.

Since I mostly decorated the living room with furniture and decor I already had, this allowed me to purchase steel and glass doors and a few small decor pieces.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become more and more drawn to decorating with thrift finds and estate sales. Not only can it be a budget-friendly decorating option (usually), but I love being able to find unique, well-made pieces that fit my design style.

I already mentioned the thrifted art wall gallery, but I also found a beautiful vintage wooden coffee table that is perfect for this small space. And it was only $30.

If you’ve been around Chatfield Court for a while you’ll know I’m not a curtain girl. I’m more of a minimalist and to be honest, I don’t want to clean curtains.

The plan for this room was to hang the woven screens I installed when we moved in.

But after I hung them back up and put my room back together, something felt off. As if something is missing.

I gave it a few weeks to see if it was just a room change, but the window wall still looked unfinished. I knew I had to hang the curtains. The curtains I went with are from Two Pages, Liz Linen Drape Pleated.

Designing A Small Living Room With A Large Sectional

I think my gut was right. Although simple, curtains add softness and finish to this side of the room.

I am thrilled with how this room turned out. It’s really my style and I find myself walking in to escape the craziness of Reno and just sit on the sofa and enjoy the peaceful feeling I get from being here.
