We started by building a 2’x4′ mattress pad frame. We cut wood that fits perfectly in the wall-to-wall space. After the back and side pieces are cut, we cut shorter pieces to create cross supports under the platform and you can see when we start adding them underneath. You end up wanting one about every 12 inches.
I don’t have a nailer so I used my Kreg Jig to attach all of these things. This creates pocket holes in your wood, allowing the pieces to fit tightly together. I’ve lost count of the number of projects I’ve used at this point, so I highly recommend it.
After the frame was complete, we added 1/2 inch plywood to create a solid surface for the mattress to rest on. We measured it to size with a circular saw and nailed it together with a nail gun. Make sure the seam between the sections is on one of the cross braces.
That would have been the end of the lower deck, but the next morning we decided to raise the deck a few inches off the ground. We thought it would be better if there was room to slide the board across. So we roll! We separated it enough so that we could screw it into the wall a little higher. We also added 2″ x 4″ legs under our deck to raise it off the ground. Finally, we installed a 2′ x 2′ length across the front so we would have a place to attach the panel.

It still takes a bit of pulling to get them in place (check that line!), especially making sure all the 2×4-inch boards are secure with the screws. But they were much easier to use than the larger screws. No pilot holes needed, my regular power drill did the job.
