Remodeling a bedroom for a thirteen-year-old girl can include adding new bedding, wall art, and furniture to reflect her personal style and interests. I sat down with my daughter and planned her bedroom renovation together. I used a spiral notebook to plan her room and write down the most important details and her wish list.

Before this change, her room had two walls that we painted with lots of white paint.

We had several picture frame shelves that we arranged to form this plant wall. She wanted to have mostly fake plants, but I slipped in real plants 🙂 To keep on budget, I looked around my house for fake plants to use on this wall. I used green dollar tree stems and terra cotta dollar pots that I have stashed away in my garden shed. This shelf decoration cost us $0 to make!

The pictures are works of art that he created himself! Creativity runs in our family! The boho dollar tree picture frames are DIY (find the tutorial here) and I used tropical photos found on Deposit Photos and printed them at home.

He had a few little quirks that he added to this shelf as well. I was looking for a photo of a tropical beach with an orange VW bus in it and I couldn’t find one, so I decided to make one!  I used Canva to edit the 2 images together to create the image below. And you don’t know!

For the gallery wall, we started with a large beach and sun print that we found at Home Goods. We used this item as our inspiration for the room’s decor and color theme. She even chose the wall color from one of the green colors in the beach painting!

I found other large frames at the thrift store for $4 and $5 each. We used different frames of wood and gold with glass. I used white dollar tree board as a support inside the frame and used tape to attach Amazon prints and a quote printed at home.

I made a macrame banner and she used it in her room in the previous photo. I just drew it on an empty frame!

We found this comfy swivel chair at a thrift store. It was in perfect condition and fit in the corner of her room. It’s a great study spot or bench for relaxing and hanging out. I love that the bed and chair face the door so he can see the rest of the house. Vibe is perfect for teenage girls.

We painted 2 teal walls in Ber Borel. It is pink, green, pink. Other walls are painted BM Simply White.

She cleaned out her entire room and closet and we donated or sold items. She’s at a stage where she hasn’t played with Barbie dolls in years, which was a thing. We reduced the amount of furniture in her room and moved the bed, which now makes it feel more inviting and comfortable.

He begs to have a wooden headboard because his last headboard was a cast iron design. His hair was falling out on it and he wanted to be able to sit on the covers and work on the computer or relax.

We found this amazing Zinus fabric platform bed with tufted headboard at Sam’s Club. I love Zinus! Our primary bedroom frame is Zinus, my son’s mattress is Zinus, and we had a Zinus couch!

Funny story, these dark turquoise curtains were the first thing I ordered for her bedroom. I wasn’t sure how they would look in person or if they would look good against the green wall he wanted, but they turned out perfect!

The only thing I did with these curtains was cut each panel in half to create a total of 4 panels. The windows are very narrow and these curtain panels are wide, so I plan to cut and sew them to save money.

I personally don’t like planks and wood or any wood trim on the walls. If you’ve ever removed boards and wood, you know why I hate it! Beautiful when taken care of, but wood floors and walls are dusty and a @$$ to repair if you remove it. So I convinced her that there was no need for a board and baton

On the other side of the room, we added an old dresser that I’m dying to renovate! She chose this dress and it is really beautiful. I wanted to hang the TV on the wall above the closet, but she still decides she wants a TV. If not, I might add a large neon sign or DIY sign for this wall.
