2021 is the year of parties of all kinds. We hosted a small intimate party for our close friends on Diwali this year. Considering everything we’ve been through in the last 18 months, this year’s celebration is extra special, lighter, sweeter. I enjoyed preparing the house with all the Diwali decorations, planning Diwali dinner menus, and eating more than I should.
Diwali is a five-day festival of lights, celebrated by millions of Hindus, Jains and Sikhs around the world. The story behind Diwali is based on Indian mythology. Diwali is the day when Lord Ram, his wife Sita Devi and brother Lakshman returned to their homeland after 14 years of exile. The villagers light the way for Rama, who defeats the demon king Ravana.
Or the spiritual path of Lord Mahavira (24th Jain Tirthankara). In Jain scriptures, Diwali is called Deepalikaya which means the light emanating from the body. The earth and the sky were lit up with lights to symbolize the divine nature of Lord Mahavira.
Diwali is celebrated for five days, the first day being Dhanteras marking the beginning of the five days of the festival. In fact, the only big day I knew about growing up was Diwali. It’s a school holiday and the festive season is about to ramp up in the coming days.
Jain Mandir Dwaja…
We go shopping for new clothes (new clothes are bought twice a year, once for birthdays and once for Diwali, not without thinking or when the season changes). The house is packed with cooks, helpers, relatives and neighbors preparing for Diwali or talking about them. The sweet smell of garlic and sugar is coming from every house in the area.
Another important activity of this Diwali is Lakshmi Puja. Hindus pray to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, on this day to bless them with health, wealth and prosperity. On this day people worship Goddess Lakshmi and buy new things. Buying gold, silver, clothes, and gadgets is considered a sign of prosperity. Today, it is also a tradition of Diwali to visit the homes of relatives, relatives and friends and give gifts and sweets.

For Diwali decorations, I have a bunch of fresh flowers and some artificial marigold garlands. Appetizers and snacks are served on plates for easy sharing. Instead of using traditional rangoli colors, I arranged the flowers in copper pots filled with water. A few aromatherapy candles combined with floating LED lights completed the look. Diwali decorations, simple 🙂
The third day is the main day of Diwali. It is the day when feasts are cooked, rangoli is decorated on the door of the houses, garlands are decorated on the doors and houses and roads are lit up with oil lamps, making it a real festival of lights.
Another unique tradition on Diwali night is playing cards. This is probably the only time of the year that this storm is allowed indoors. It comes from the idea that it symbolizes the fluid nature of money in our lives and our acceptance of this fact.
