Decorating Ideas For Corner Fireplace Mantel – Our corner pod made sense out of an awkward corner and made our bedroom feel cozier. We built ours using a kit, but extended the shelf above the mantle. Here you can choose a fireplace mantel set at an affordable price.

Our bedroom is not completely finished, we are still working on small updates. Subscribe to our blog to follow us, or head over to Facebook or Instagram and say hello! Everything is in progress here 🙂

Has always been difficult to decorate. It is a 20 foot by 20 foot square space with two windows on one side of the room. After placing our not-so-square furniture in the room, we ended up with some pretty awkward corners. There is one corner in particular that I thought was dead space; one where none of the existing furniture will fit, so we installed a corner fireplace shelf with our own hands.

Solving Andi’s Awkward Living Room Dilemma

First of all, my husband is a TV watcher and I am not. One thing I’ve learned after living in an open house with kids is that it’s 100% impossible to watch a show like The Weekends and expect privacy. 🙂

Master bedroom. The bathroom is immediately on the left. After installing the TV, I had a hard time finding furniture that made sense in that corner, but I knew there had to be a way to make it look nice.

The compromise was to install a TV in our room. But he looked rather lonely in the corner.

For $100, we picked up a DIY corner “kit” at a local Habitat for Humanity ReStore in the building supplies section. If you don’t have a ReStore near you, there are some sandwiches online that are very nice.

We followed the package instructions and installed it. The corner looked like this for a long time.

This project aimed to create an atmosphere in the main room. I’m sure it adds value to our home, or at least it will set our home apart if it ever comes on the market.

If we install a fireplace, we will take the appropriate precautions and remove the carpet and install a heat resistant hearth. We will cross that bridge when the time comes 🙂

…we put the TV in a frame and made it look like a single unit. First we built a corner shelf to put it over the fireplace.

Mark made a frame that was perfectly cut to fit the corner of the wall and cover all the unfinished, exposed wood.

Having built-in shelves made it possible to actually place taller items on the mantelpiece. I found these inexpensive sideboard lamps from Kirkland that are the perfect size.

Many people said that we should paint the space behind the TV white. We have left this question to the new owners of the house.

It might be a fireplace, but really… we just built the cutest dog house in the world for Buddy. 🙂

We haven’t even tried installing a heater because it works fine for us and Buddy. Buddy is getting older now, so we want him to have as many amenities as possible. I think he had a little stroke and is practically deaf and blind. 🙁

We don’t have a manual, but we’re happy to answer questions. Total cost was about $200 and was a perfect upgrade for this space use. I hope I’m sharing it to help you in your “vision” if you’re ever stuck with a room that needs a little tidying up.

It all started with him… Corner fireplaces are quite difficult to decorate. they tend to look awkward or empty and it can be so hard to find symmetry at such a deep angle. I look forward to showing you how easy it can be to create a beautifully designed corner fireplace that will look complete and set for the holidays.

Even though I took down our Christmas decorations a few weeks ago, our fireplace sat empty almost all the time simply because I didn’t know what to do with it. You see, not only do we have an awkward corner fireplace to contend with, but the fireplace above is a deep corner that looks like a giant black hole that is completely impossible to decorate. Even after browsing Pinterest, I was totally confused (why aren’t there any pictures of how to decorate those damn capes?).

How To Build A Diy Fireplace For An Electric Insert From Scratch

I decorated and redecorated my fireplace at least a hundred times, raiding every room in my house until I finally figured out which pieces looked the best. And so, in hopes that it will save you all the time and effort of figuring it all out yourself, I’m teaming up with one of my favorite online decor stores to show you how I decorated our incredible corner fireplace for the holidays.

One of my least favorite things about our corner mantel is its sheer depth; that deep and awkward corner is so damn hard to fill.

My first instinct was to put something big diagonally behind, reducing the angle and making the fireplace look like a fireplace. While there’s no doubt it would work, I started to wonder if by losing the space behind it, I’d be giving up a really great opportunity to add some depth to the fireplace decor. Most layers are so straight and narrow that it’s hard to stack more than a layer or two, but with ours we have a great opportunity to add layer after layer.

So instead of cutting off that awkward corner in the back, I decided to make the extra space work for me. I knew I had to start with something that was pretty big in the back, something that had a little presence so I wouldn’t get lost all the way back there; I finally settled on our straw Christmas tree at the bottom of a wall and then put: some old worn windows on the other side. If you don’t want to build a tree out of pallets, a mirror (or two) would also look really nice.

How To Decorate A Fireplace Mantel — The Decor Formula

For my next “layer” of decor, after a lot of trial and error, I decided the best thing would be some tall and narrow pieces that would allow me to place things at that awkward angle, so I put up some lanterns and a table-sized tree. (similar here ) to create a beautiful holiday trio. I like that nothing looks too put together, but with the wood tones and muted colors, everything still looks put together.

Obviously we needed somewhere to hang our stockings (what’s a Christmas rack without Santa’s stockings!), so I grabbed a super cute stocking stand that was sitting in front of the fireplace. I think my handmade farm socks look pretty cool against all that.

And finally, I added a few sprigs of snow green to make things look nice and rich.

These corner mantels can be so tricky to decorate and it probably took a ton of trial and error to get it right, but I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.
