As a child, Diwali preparation in our family started a few weeks before the actual festival. The atmosphere inside the house and in the markets of the city will increase at the same time. People are naturally motivated to create memories by decorating your home inside and out. However, for those of us living outside India, it may be a little different.

Outside of India, Diwali is not celebrated by the majority of the population. There is not much enthusiasm for Diwali outside our homes or in the markets. Despite this, we invest the greatest efforts to transmit and convey our cultural traditions to our children. We want them to have the same childhood memories as us.

Every Diwali, I try to create excitement in the children with all the decorations, lights and fireworks. Now they look forward to it every year. Even if your busy schedule doesn’t allow time to implement all the ideas presented here, do what you can. Something is better than nothing. I am sharing some ideas from my Diwali home decorations which you can use whole or parts as you like.

Diwali is a festival of lights. Outdoor decorative lighting is my husband’s responsibility and it really freshens it up, drawing the attention of everyone in the neighborhood. The pictures don’t do it justice, but the overall effect of the lighting was stunning.

He used professional installers for the headlights, which cost about $500. He could do the rest of the lighting himself as it could be safely accessed using a standard household ladder. For the paths and circles around the lamppost, he used programmable LED rope lights. He decided to use grid-style LEDs for tree trunks, house posts and large planters. Standard LED filament lighting was used to create the pyramid around the lamp post.

The kids loved helping with the Diwali decorations, making it a family project. The little boy was busy managing the spikes for the rope lighting, while the high school friend gave her ideas and passed the tools to the father on the ladder.

Please be sure to use the appropriate GFCI protected circuits to power your lights and take electrical hazard precautions when installing the lights.

In Indian tradition, the main door has a special meaning. Many Indian traditions revolve around decorating and performing various rituals at the entrance of the house or in the puja room. The same goes for Diwali decorations.

During my recent visit to India. These are some of the few common items I get from India every time I visit. Diya refers to the clay lamp used in the Indian subcontinent. These days, you can buy decorative diyas in almost all major US cities at Indian grocery stores. They are also available on Amazon if you don’t have time to visit your local store.

After much research I decided to use artificial flowers that I found on Amazon. I was pleased with the quality, feel and overall look of the flowers. I also used some fresh flowers from my garden and local shop. The lamps were purchased from Pier1 Imports.

Diwali Decoration Ideas To Jazz-up Your Home

You have the option to make rangoli with colors and flowers. Since I have a small child, powder colors didn’t seem like a good idea. So I went with a simple design that can be done quickly in 10 to 15 minutes with a mix of natural and fake flowers.

Did you notice the url in front of the rangoli? Orli, a bronze bowl for holding candles and floating flowers, adds another dimension to any festive or ethnic decor. Liven up your static decor by making it dynamic with floating candles and flowers.

Next is the entrance, which is the first view any visitor has of your home. It creates a first impression and anticipation to see what else is out there. It should convey the festive mood of your home by creating the desire to enter to immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere. The lobby design shown here uses a central idol of Ganesh seated on a beaded medallion table and surrounded by decorations consisting of brass objects and candle holders adorned with tea lights.

I used my existing bangles as tea candle holders, which are inexpensive and a great way to add an Indian touch to your decor. I have a large collection of bangles so I borrowed some here to decorate the tea lights.

The Ganesha idol was given to us by my brother-in-law. Here, I have used brass bowls as urlis. To add urlis as a decorative piece, you don’t need to buy them or use a brass bowl. You can use any flat shallow bowl to create the same effect.

In the above picture, I have used Kundan Rangolis for decorating the floor. Alternatively, you can use a Rangoli design like the one shown below. In my case, with a toddler running around, it only took a few hours.

Inside the house, you can add small decorations in various places to change the overall look and feel of your home and make it look more festive. For example, I decorated my coffee table in the living room with candles and flowers.

You can easily tell that I am a huge fan of Pier1 Imports. Most of the items in this design are from the same store. Whether you’re looking at the tablescape, or the trays and candles, all of the items are from Pier1 Imports, which I’ve collected over time. I keep moving them around the house to create new designs using different combinations.

I have a good collection of runners and trays. They are my weakness. So whenever I see a good designer item, I tend to buy it for future use. The trays provide a defined place and focal point and allow me to focus on the limited space. Runners add a different texture to the space and help bring color contrast and further enhance other design elements. I also used Kundan Rangolis as space fillers to give it an ethnic touch.

Another example is fireplace decorations, which are usually the focal point of the living room in an American home. You can create a nice ethnic design by placing some objects on the hearth and in the space immediately in front of the fireplace.

Here, I have used a combination of three independent elements to create a variety with a common goal to showcase the various ethnic elements of India. I have used two elephant heads beautifully decorated with Nettipattam combined with brass musical instrument objects. I fell in love with these beautiful Nettipattam elephant heads while visiting Kerala and couldn’t resist adding them to my collection. I love the authenticity they add to any space I use them in.

It is a combination of diyas, kunda rangolis, fresh flowers with carefully selected mats and a creative centerpiece that anyone can easily put together from photography. Pearls & Twigs Shimmer Placemats and Glitz Beaded Silver Placemats are both available at Pier1 Imports.

Last Minute Diwali Decoration Ideas

The last but most important place to decorate your home for Diwali is the pooja room and temple. Laxmi pooja is the most important element of the entire Diwali celebration, which is performed in the pooja room of the temple. My family moves every few years due to the nature of my husband’s work. Hence, though I would like to have a separate pooja room, I currently have to share it with the office.

Therefore, I am using a handmade wooden temple with Rajasthani work with a matching backdrop. This decor uses tulle fabric embellished with peacock feathers, pearl bandanavar and pearl strings. The ends of the tulle were tied using brass elephant ties. This setting increases the pooja angle.

The door to the puja room, which I share with my home office, is also decorated with bandhanwar and flowers. Try adding small details like satiya stickers and maha-laxmi footprint stickers. The svastika is associated with Ganesha, and the footprints of Maha-Laksmi are associated with the goddess of wealth and prosperity. These small details greatly increase the impact of your design.
