The minuses were the old baseboard heater and chandelier that we ran into every time we passed the room.
This 10×10 room is in our small entryway at the front of the house. We’re pretty sure the previous, and only, owners used it as a dining area. We don’t need another dining area so it now serves as a sitting/living area.
The first project I tackled in this room was getting rid of the chandelier and the two baseboard heaters. We don’t need heaters, they’re just ugly, so I removed them and repaired all the holes and damaged walls.
I also removed the old thermostat that filled that hole, along with all the other holes and nails that came out.

Next was to seal all the trim and windows (problems in previous house) and then proceeded to fix the trim.
At this point in the project I was ready to paint the walls. First, I applied several coats of bright white paint to the ceiling. What a difference it made!
The trim also got the same coat of paint I was using on the rest of the house, Behr Polar Bear plus BM Advance.
Finally it was time to paint the wall. I used this house to experiment with different shades, which are soft matte white paint colors. This house has a lot of imperfections in the walls so I was hoping a matte sheen would tone them down.

The paint color I chose for this room was BM White Dove Matte. I have used the dove white kit before and always loved it so I went with it again.
I couldn’t believe how much this soft white color brightened up the room. It was painted a neutral gray color that was… well. Soft white though, really made a big difference.

This room was meant to be framed, the picture should be framed properly. It was my first time doing a project like this but it was really easy to do. Calculating the spacing of the boxes turned out to be the most difficult part of the whole project.

I wanted something a little more modern than a typical barn door. When I saw the glass and metal doors, I knew they would work well with the feel I was going for in this room.

Remember, I’m trying to be budget friendly when I can and this is the perfect place. I’ve been collecting art at flea markets and estate sales for years so I’ve picked out a few favorites. I also found some public domain printables online and printed them on vintage ribbon.
I love shopping around my house and decorating a room with things I already have. Besides being budget friendly, it’s a great way to use your favorite things in different ways.
The unit moved us from Florida to Illinois and now we have two homes in North Carolina. It’s a little big for this room but it’s a piece we love and can’t justify buying a new one when we don’t use the room every day.
